Most school boards in Virgnia are elected. When they do stupid things they can be tossed out by the voters.

And interestingly, despite Youngkin’s attacks on its elected school board, McAuliffe won Loudon County 55-45.

“There are several indirect resolutions targeted at EY but those were issued under the title of “The Situation in the Middle East”.”

I read all of them. None of them were targeted at Israel. They were about Syria, Lebanon, and Yemen. There was not a single SC resolution targeting Israel in 2020. Nor has there been in 2021.

Maybe other UN agencies targeted Israel, but not the Security Council, which is the most important body.

António Guterres is the best UN Secretary General since Trygve Lie, and the only one since Lie who isn’t anti-Israel. I think his choice represented Divine Intervention. He was recently appointed for a second five year term. Oh, and he is a Socialist! Would that more people on the Left were like him rather than some of the nutty folks we have here in the US

Correct. There is room to be meikel in the case of two safek’s — two doubts — but indeed usually two derabbanans are asur. However, in this case, there is no derabbanan, there is a minhag.

That is indeed the halachah but as all of us who have just finished tractate Pesachim know, that was not a unanimous opinion.

“Why doesn’t kitniyos before chatzos have the status of 2 derabanons which is most probably permitted.”

Al pi halachah kitniyot is mutar both deoraita and derabbanan. It is a minhag. And what constitutes kitniyot isn’t even clear. The Rema has a list but we don’t seem to follow him.

Not a concern today, though. Monoculture agriculture. Rice isn’t a real concern either; while rice can be grown in dry fields all commercially available rice today comes from flooded fields. Any contamination with chametz grains for either would come in the processing, not from the growing.

If you read the history of the 17th Amendment you will learn that the impetus for it was the state legislatures themselves. They were tired of having their elections nationalized. They were very close to getting an Article V Convention when Congress finally gave in and sent them the 17th Amendment for ratification, which occurred quickly.

    “No Democratic Party”

No Democrat Party. Idiot Republicans keep using that term.

“Robert Byrd was a member of the Klan and a U.S. senator.”

Ed Jackson was a KKK member and Governor of Indiana. Clarence Morley was a KKK member and Governor of Colorado. Both were Republicans. Calvin Coolidge openly sought KKK support in 1924. William Howard Taft and Herbert Hoover actively tried to purge the Republican Party of Black’s, particularly in the South, and largely succeeded, in something called the “lily white movement”. Rutherford B. Hayes ended Reconstruction and allowed Jim Crow to proceed unabated. Not until 1936 would the Republican Party finally stop the racism, but it instead turned to anti-Semitism in the lead up to World War II. A miracle happened in 1940 when it nominated lifelong Democrat Wendell Willkie for President and endorsed Civil Rights but that ended in 1964 for good. Richard Nixon, who as late as 1960 had a good civil rights record, welcomed the racists into the Republican Party whom the Democrats had expelled. The last good thing a Republican president did for civil rights was when Nixon appointed Lewis Powell to the Supreme Court. Powell, an otherwise conservative corporate lawyer, was loved by Virginia civil rights activists. Lewis Powell was a Democrat, the last person to be nominates to the Supreme Court by a President of the opposite Party.

There were exceptions. My great grandfather was a big Republican activist in Kentucky a century ago. He helped to get Edwin Morrow elected Governor in 1919. Morrow got the legislature to enact an anti-lynching law, and he sent the National Guard to Lexington to prevent a lynching. The National Guard opened fire on the lynch mob, killing a number of them. That of course ended Morrow’s political career. 🙁

Republican apologists for their party’s terrible recent civil rights record rarely admit the party’s history. Only from 1940 to 1960 was it superior to the Democrats.

That is true for the Pfizer, Moderna, and J&J vaccines. Get vaccinated as soon as you are eligible. There are no really good treatments (hydroxychloroquine has been absolutely proven to be useless).

    ” I don’t see 40 pro-China or pro-Russia senators”

Well there were over 120 members of the House of Representatives who voted to overturn a Presidential election. So while we arent at 40 percent yet there are indeed a lot of folks who are doing the work of Putin.

“Should the Supreme Court be abolished because how the Supreme Court ruled in Dred Scott?”

No, but the Constitution was amended to overturn that decision and Congress increased the size of the court to help to make sure that there would never again be such a horrible decision. Note that one of the justices in the majority, John Archibald Campbell, would commit treason against the United States, joining the Confederacy.

“the history of the Democrat party is tied to racism. Learn some American history.”

There is not and has never been a Democrat Party in the United States. You need to learn some American history.

Furthermore the Democratic Party expelled its racists in the 1960s and 1970s. The Republican Party embraced them with open arms. Barry Goldwater, Ronald Reagan, and George H. W. Bush all opposed the 1964 Civil Rights Act, which was unquestionably good for Jews. Like I said, learn some American history.

“your perception that Trump encouraged anti-Semitism”

Trump definitely encouraged anti-Semitism. That is not my perception, that is fact.

He endorsed a neo-Nazi, Paul Nehlen, in a congressional primary. That even a single Jew could support Trump after that shows that Trump Jews have interests other than those of the Jewish people as primary.

He came before the Republican Jewish Coalition and spouted meme after meme. Quotes: “Is there anybody that doesn’t renegotiate deals in this room? This room negotiates them – perhaps more than any other room I’ve ever spoken in.” and “You’re not gonna support me because I don’t want your money. You want to control your politicians, that’s fine.” At a later Republican Jewish Coaltion event he would refer to Benjamin Netanyahu as “your prime minister”. (Well I wish we did have Netanyahu as the US head of government rather than Trump, as Netanyahu has about 40 more IQ points and did a great job on COVID-19, unlike the venal Trump.} These are exactly the same memes for which Ilhan Omar correctly gets called out for anti-Semitism. Anyone calling out Omar but supporting Trump is a hypocrite whose interest is other than fighting anti-Semitism.

Trump said that “very fine people” marched with Nazis in Charlottesville. Absolutely no excuse for that. Unequivocably condemning Nazis should be the easist political position to take, but Trump had to make it like he was looking to get supporters on both sides. (Note that both David Duke and Louis Farrakhan had supported Trump in 2016. Three hatemongers — all birds of a feather.)

Trump isn’t the kind of anti-Semite who would ever shoot up a synagogue. No Trump supporter has ever done that. But he is the kind of anti-Semite who fans the flames of hate, including anti-Semitism, and that is what most of Europe was like in the 19th century. The 20th century followed.

Both Trump and Biden have Jewish grandchildren. Trump spouts old anti-Semitic Jewish memes that he clearly believes, even though he doesn’t seem to personally hate Jews. But Mussolini didn’t personally hate Jews, either. Trump also says nice things about anti-Semites, and even lies about them at times, such as when he claimed that he didn’t know who David Duke is. Biden doesn’t spout anti-Semitic memes, period.

“I don’t think the Torah’s economic system is compatible to ours.”

Correct. It requires a much more generous welfare state. And certain things we take for granted today like interest on loans, limited liability corporations. securitization of debt, bankruptcy, the cancellation of debts at death, caveat emptor on purchases (except for real estate), and freehold land tenure do not exist in the Torah’s system.

Maybe it is good that Bernie Sanders is an unlearned Jew. Could you imagine what he would be like if he discovered that the Torah does not permit corporations at all?

“They are about redistributing wealth. And controlling people. Neither of which are Torah concepts.”

Actually they are very much Torah concepts, at least if you get your Torah through Moshe Rabbeinu rather than Ayn Rand. See the numerous agricultural tithes, the mandatory charity contributions that the Rabbis instituted to replace them when we ceased to be an agricutural people (and which were instituted in the diaspora as well as in Eretz Yisrael). Also see regarding business conduct the requirements for honesty and transparency, fair treatment of workers, fair competition, and prohibition of charging or paying interest. And note that you can get flogged and get your property confiscated if you decide that you don’t like your wealth being redistributed or yourself being controlled. Chazan and Rambam talk about this extensively, and in great detail. Regarding business conduct the Torah is arguably to the left of Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren.

    “the constitution is clear”

Actually it is pretty clear that it does NOT provide for an individual right to own a firearm, only for a right to organize militias. The historical background is that in 1708, Queen Anne Stuart vetoed the Scottish Militia Act in order to prevent Scots from joining a rebellion in opposition to the Act of Union. Basically, the Second Amendment was about being able to overthrow the government. No less a figure than the late Chief Justice Warren Burger wrote that the idea that there was an individual right to own firearms was nonsense. Unfortunately far right extremists have taken over the Supeme Court and we pay for that with lives.
