    @Dovnyc,

    Your simplistic view of the law/lawyers is laughable.

    Someone accused of committing a crime is entitled to a defense by a competent lawyer. A Lawyer is obligated to zealously defend their client in one of two ways. 1) Raise reasonable doubt as to their clients guilt or innocence by offering an alternate theory of the crime. 2)Offer proof that their client is not responsible for his actions/his actions are justified.

    A “Frum Yid” can do these things without agreeing with the things his client has allegedly done. edited for unnecessary slander

    edited again for unnecessary remarks which may or may not be true, but will unnecessarily sidetrack the discussion.

    Ahhhh…I love this time of year. The freezer opens and we get a whole bunch of people looking for magic tricks to solve their problems.

    in reply to: Keurig Tevila #928062

    So even though there is a perfectly acceptable opinion that claims it does not need tevila, people are looking for opinions that would obligate them to possibly destroy their new purchase.

    I guess it’s ok if it helps show how frum you really are.

    in reply to: Frustrating Jewish moments #925396

    Having 5 daughters who have been programed to marry boys who wont work for a living and being expected to foot the bill for it all.

    in reply to: Please Daven For Our Lost Children #915521

    “May we have only Nachas from our children and share many Simchos.”

    Ah yes…the only reason people have children, so that they become their own little personal “nachas” machines.

    Some kids find happiness and fufilment elsewhere. The best and brightest are seeing through it all. And all you can offer is lip service tefilahs rather than looking at the real problem.

    But yeah, shoot the messenger. It’s worked well in the past. Maybe the Jewish Observer can do another issue about “Kids at risk” that will solve the problem.

    in reply to: Please Daven For Our Lost Children #915510

    Guess I struck a nerve

    in reply to: Please Daven For Our Lost Children #915507

    How incredibly naive and patronizing.

    When a child goes off the derech, the first thing a parent usually says is “how am I going to show my face in shul now?”

    Some people leave, especially when confronted with things like emperical data, historcal accuracy of the Torah, racially superior attitudes towards other people, or just being tired of holding 17th century shtetle life up as an ideal plane of existance.

    It’s been a fact of life since the Torah was “given”

    in reply to: Chillul Hashem on the school bus #915386

    Gee…you go around teaching kids that the goyim are “subhuman” and it’s ok to cheat and steal from them…then you wonder about behavior like this. Because the kids think that they can act like animals and their being “frum” automatically makes them better than the rest of the universe, without the refined behavior to back it up.

    Kids are remarkably observant and will pick up on ideas and modes of behavior no matter how subtle. So the child who hears his father talk about the “shvartze” in his office and how dumb he is will learn it’s ok to talk/think like that. Same with how people from different frum sects are treated. When the childs school is pushing their own brand of “Torah True Judaisim” with no respect for anyone else, its no wonder why they would tease other kids about things like that.

    But yeah, it’s much easier to blame entertainers who are perceived to not be frum.

    in reply to: The Power of a Gadol #914384

    These stories of “miracles” happen on a bell curve. WE tend to only pay heed to the ones where the results are “spooky” and indicative of some super natural ability.

    I will admit that the dedication it takes to study Torah that in depth will give the person better control of some cognative process I do not believe that all of the sudden their brain gains the ability to see anything via the supernatural.

    Oh and to label me a “kofer” because I dont believe that the Baba Sali could shoot lasers out of his eyes or that Rav Elyashiv could predict this that and the next thing tells me that papal infallibility is alive and well in our community.

    in reply to: The Power of a Gadol #914366

    If “Emunas Chachomim” means believing ordinary human beings have super powers then no thank you.

    in reply to: The Power of a Gadol #914362

    So you think the “power of a gadol” is that he can look at a list of names and see whose time has run out?

    Nope, they are human just like you or I. They have ammassed insane amounts of Torah knowledge and can apply it to their halachic rulings but there is no crystal ball that allows them to see the future.

    Could just be that the Gadol was familiar with the situation vis a vi the persons family coming to him and sharing details which might not have been know to your friend who gave you the request.

    Equal division of labor. Unless poppa in law is paying the bills, then you are in wifeys pocket and should just try and be housebroken.

    in reply to: Going off the Derech #1182651

    @Writeorwrong

    What does that say about the community if wanting your to protect your child from a wild eyed zealot will lead to negative reprecussions because said zealot has the right last name?

    This should whole situation should have you asking some very tough questions.

    in reply to: Going off the Derech #1182647

    @Imaofthree

    “You want to remain in your house, your neighborhood, and for your children to live without fear of these bullies”

    So your solution is to instead give another victory to the “bullies”

    The only thing a bully responds to is someone standing up to him. And a visit from the police is not only warranted but necessary!

    Sometimes the boat needs to be rocked even if it means a stare or two in shul. And to think that frum yidden would force a family out of the neighboorhood for protecting their child, makes me think that the behavior of certain kanoim is actually standard operating procedure instead of the aberation that all of the appologists claim it to be.

    in reply to: Neturei Karta. #1106124

    @yekke2

    Believe it or not, there are frum people that work for the Mossad.

    Some even at the operatiave level.

    However there is the famous story of an agent who was recommended for an extended mission in an enemy country. He asked R’Sholomo Zalman Auerbach if he should go as he would have to abandom mitzvots as any marker no matter how small would put him in danager.

    R’Shlomo said that if it’s a mission that can save Jewish lives then it is proper for him to go and likened it to when Esther lived in Achashveroses palace in order to save her people. He said the lack of mitzvots could be rectified after the mission and was a temprorary situation. He went on to say that the nature of espionage is that you must be ready to kill at any moment and the violence can force you to be desensitized to the point where you can kill someone and then order a cup of coffee as if it was just another errand to run that day. R’Shlomo Zalman said, that kind of damage can not be undone and therefore it was not proper for him to take the assignment.

    in reply to: Going off the Derech #1182638

    @Writeorwrong

    So you need to weigh your options. On one hand you have a child whose committment to yidishkeit is shaken due to being a victim of a zealot. Who will now view every frum person as suspect. Worse yet, he will start to doubt your love for him since you didnt go after his attacker with everything you’ve got. And maybe some of his older brothers choices will start making sense.

    On the other hand, you are struggling with the desire to protect the status quo because of some perceived bias against “frum yidden” by the police.

    The choice is yours

    in reply to: Stratocaster or Telecastor #908314

    You can walk in to the place and plug in any guitar into any amplifier and test it out. If you are really interested in purchasing something then you can even ask them to bring in some effect pedals to try too.

    I’ve used all 3. Right now I don’t own a Les Paul but my favorite has always been the custom.

    in reply to: Stratocaster or Telecastor #908312

    Les Paul would win that discussion everytime. Now the real question is which kind of Gibson.

    My preference for overall use is the Les Paul. But I used to have an Epiphone SG that had some mods done to it and it played really nicely, got that nice Chunk when paired with a Marshall JCM 900.

    A few times a month I like to torture myself and go into Guitar Center and play the Epiphone Sheraton II through an Orange Tiny Terror..it responds really well to attack and the volume knob on the guitar.

    in reply to: we need government paid tuition- let our voice be heard #908360

    @iced, The U.S. government is not interested in subsidizing education that they do not control. The Catholics have dealt with their tuition crisis by consolidating their operations and combining schools. They also get subsidized by the local Diocese in an effort to keep their tuition figures waaaaaaaaay below ours.

    None of those options are available to us since we dont really get along with each other too well and most parents live in paralyzing fear of exposing their child to the wrong “type” of Jew.

    @arc,

    The schools can provide a better secular education with minimal spending by not treating it as a joke. They can foster an enviroment where the talmidim arent ridiculed for taking it seriously and where the teachers arent treated with utter disdain and maybe even a modicum of respect.

    Aren’t there Yeshivas on the west coast?

    Oh yeah thats right…only “in town yidden” are good enough nowadays

    in reply to: we need government paid tuition- let our voice be heard #908355

    Not a possibility unless you shred the constitution.

    The Catholic community has this struggle as well and they dont go whining that the government hates them for not paying their bills.

    Torah education is a sacrifice but the schools should be giving the parents more for their money.

    in reply to: Stratocaster or Telecastor #908310

    That is a “lesser of two evils” choice for me.

    I’m a Gibson/Epiphone guy. If I had to chose I would say Stratocaster since it’s more versitile then the Tele.

    I’ve always found the Tele to be really twangy and the pickups dont pack a lot of punch.

    in reply to: Shocking Study of Modern Orthodox OTD Rate #941584

    @zahavasdad

    I would actually go so far as to defend it, people who want out need a safe way to get there.

    Especially females who can fall down a much darker road in search of an exit..nothing more needs to be said on that.

    It’s a necessary evil, and if you want to put them out of business then there are two choices.

    1: build the ghetto walls even higher and employ a 1984 style level of surveliance on the inhabitants

    2: widen the derech a little bit so not everyone who doesnt fit in the box seeks the need for approval elsewhere.

    @AZOI,

    Absolutly! But working is only for people who dont have enough emunah that the bills will get paid on time.

    So programs designed for the “truly needy” go to benefit people who can get jobs but just choose not to.

    in reply to: what is the impact of where you went to seminary on shidduchim? #902038

    The impact is just another arbitrary criteria added to a ridiculous process.

    Amazing why any young women subjects themselves to this madness to begin with.

    in reply to: acoustic guitars #902347

    Do not get anything from Fender or Rouge.

    For a beginner you want something with a slim neck that makes it easier to get your hands on the frets.

    Some of the best slim necks are on guitars made by Ibanez.

    For 150 you can get a very good guitar by them.

    If not Ibanez, also try Epiphone.

    Make sure you sign up for lessons, there are some really great books and videos and online resources but there is no substitute for in person instruction.

    Do not expect to be proficent in a short period of time, you get results based on the ammount of effort you put in!

    Well most Americans dont really care about these types of issues as long as their taxes stay low enough or go to the right places. Only conservative or liberal zealots really care enough to make big deals out of things like this anymore.

    The ball to “issues” like this got rolling once they repealed the laws regarding interacial marriage and there is no end in sight.

    If your question was how can frum people vote for people like this? Then the answer is simple, people who hold these kinds of views are very loose with other peoples money and tax dollars and will therefore increase spending on social programs. These social programs intended as a “saftey net” are instead looked at as a le’chatchila entitlement once you get married.

    So the choice is, conservatives who want to cling to 50’s era values, or liberals that will make sure you can buy that brick of cholov yisrael cheese.

    Complaining about the decay of society while taking the money from these same politicians is called “having your cake and eating it too”

    in reply to: A Wife’s Obligation Towards Her Husband & Kids #902285

    Wifes obligation is to work 60 hours a week, do all the house work, raise and incubate the kids, and have dinner on the table with enough time to spare before her husband escapes to night seder.

    And what with the shidduch crisis and all, she should be grateful that she is even married in the first place.

    Just like in the alter heim

    Kosher Ham and I were quoting a guest post writen by Paul Shaviv who is the head of RAMAZ.

    Read it again, Paul spoke to Rabbi Pruzansky regarding some of the data and methods used in the study and Rabbi Pruzansky admitted that he was relying on an oral report.

    Whatever issues you have with HM are not relevant here as this was a guest post by a third party.

    I’m sure that wherever these “numbers” are somewhat applicable it will be addressed, my comment however was more about how this might creep into a drasha as a “look how much better we are then them” type message.

    But feel free to dismiss me for my uber sarcastic comments and my insightful barbs and splashes of reality.

    I already pointed out that quote from HM

    Just kidding..I dont care if there is weight gain, as long as there is some yichus or money there.

    in reply to: Shocking Study of Modern Orthodox OTD Rate #941494

    The head of a “Modern Orthodox” school contacted Rabbi Pruzansky regarding the results of this study. See below for the money quote.

    Relying on an oral report? Sounds like ancedotal evidence at best and typical wolf crying that seems to be standard procedure within the “chinuch” system.

    I Would not be suprised to see this retracted in the very near future.

    However, everyone here has already made up their minds and the people who feel like their derech is vindicated by the study will cheer and feel better about themselves while overlooking their own failures. While the MO crowd will continue to seek approval from people who will never consider them to be truely part of “Klal Yisroel”
