Max Well – This is quite well known, and no chidush to me or my faamily. We’ve had 1 bar mitzvah, and 5 bat mitzvahs, and two weddings. When we made a cerimony for our girls, it was done at home with immediate family.

My wife and sister in law are shadchanim, but they’re both in eretz yisroel. My wife is less active now as well.

To be honest, if those could e-mail the standrad info, that would probably make things much simpler. Those original first time long phone calls, then writing things down in a notebook. This way everything gets written down originally, can forward to other shadchanim. No wasting time if we don’t have anything, etc.

This has really gone way off this entire thread.

Again, all or almost poskim are not against not growing a beard. Using powder or cream is muttar as well as tweezers. There is a debate regarding using an electric shaver, some poskim matir some oser. Recently there has been an effort in E”Y to come up with an electric shaver, which is kosher based upon all the shitas. The shaver apparently already exists for quite some time now, and got big publicity in the newspapers.

Regarding Kabbalah, there is as well a debate. Some are of the opinion one should not even touch his beard. Some say one most grow his beard, and some including a present day Godel say one should not grow a beard.

A final debate is based upon tzuros hayid. The Chassidic as well as the previous generation Sephardic were clearly against shaving. The Litvishe-Yeshiviish were in favor for bochurim. That is to the exceptions of some, like the Chazin-Ish and his following, Reb Chayim Kanievsky etc.

The Kabbalist …. had a dream that the Mesiach is on his way, and it’s necessary to publish this. He ordered that everyone passes this on, in order to get saved by the paing of the Meshiach. Whoever doesn’t is likely to lose lots of money, etc.

Hello99 – I was personally by Rav Elyashiv, yes years ago when I was bochur, and I know many others as well at that time. He paskined based on the outcome, if the shaver did too fine a job it was considered haschasa, and assur according to the shita that the outcome is what is important and not whether the instrument is similar to scissors.

The maaseh with the Chazon Ish I have heard from other sources, but I heard this when a bochur was asking Rav SZ Auerbach the shaila, and I was standing right there. The point here again is whether the outcome haschasa is important or the means, i.e, scissors are important.

I believe the Machon Hatenhnologi Lehalacha has a long diyun on this topic.

To the best of my knowledge, Rav Yaakov Yisroel Fisher was matir as well. If my father in law was still alive I could verify this. Maybe my wife or brother in law, or one of his sons knows.

I have thought this over quite extensively. If and when they are in the process of making some grave mistake, like selling their house to invest in options or futures, I would get involved, preferrably by someone from outside. My first son-in-law takes advice from me infrequently on business matters, although his father is the succesful businessman and his uncle as well, and I don’t think he asks them, although I personally asked his uncle about something. My hunch is that he knows that he doesn’t have to do what I say, and I don’t take not listening to me personally. he asked me a few times about investing in futures, and proven methods for winning. I told him it’s all a bunch of …, he said he had a friend who took a class in a specific “no risk” trading method and asked if I would like to join him, I told him, I wouldn’t mind, but I’m firm on my beliefs. He asked me about getting a credit card, after they got married, and I told him I thought it wasn’t a good idea for a young couple. He decided he wanted to get one, and asked me how to convince the bank to give him one, which I did. I think they are only using a debit card now.

Let me know what you think. I’ll try to write some more.

It was aprtly due to laws in the US, whereas in EY, the Chazon Ish made sure that there were political agreements not allowing the government getting involved in chareidi chiniuch.

The Chazon Ish’s shitah, as to what I heard from Rav SZ Auerbach is he had put ink on his hand, and used a machine, which was able to clean up the ink blot, which was proof that it is haschasa, which is a similar opinion of Rav Elyasuv’s as well.

Rav Kanievsky’s approach is clearly a haskafa approach regarding growing beards, similar to chassidish approach.

Rav Shach used the Chafetz Chayim as a kal vechomer to assur modern day shavers.

Regarding Kabbalah, as I stated before, the Ramchal apparently was clean shaven, Reb Deblitzky is mentioned previously as well. The “MilkMan” also is clean shaven. However, the vast majority of mukubalim are against touching one’s beard whatsoever. That includes the Bab Sali, Rav Sheinberg – he told my brother this very clearly; and almost all the mekubalim I’m familiar with.

Can someone please post one Posek that assurs not growing a beard without the question of taar according to nigle, i.e., using scissors or powder-cream, as well as tweezers. I personally asked Rav Elyashiv this question when I was a bochur. I know plenty of people who were addressed by Reb Chayim about this as well.

When I purchased it was only sold at his home for idelogical reasons, didn’t want profit seekers. I believe you will have to purchase by Reb Chayim his son in Bnei Brak. I’m not sure if they will sell an entire set, since the Steipler was against that as well. In favor of purchasing what is necessary for what you’re learning presently. Take the 400 bus, and get off at Ezra before Chazon Ish, and walk to Rashbam.

    3. In this day and age she can get a degree online, which she could probably do without everyone knowing.

Yes, living like an avreich is much cheaper, if you already own a home and are not marrying children off. Semanaries, i.e., post high school are more expensive, but still cheaper then the states. On the other hand marrying children off here is extremely expensive. Buying homes is extremely expensive. Dental care (young childrens care has just become free), especially orthodontics is not covered under the standard health plan. But, you have to compare apples to apples. If you live in the states with low income, you usually qualify for medicaid, food stamps, and other programs, and you will probably get a tuition cut as well. Although education costs here are very cheap, don’t ever expect a tuition break.

The tax system here is very difficult as well. One major point is that men don’t receive tax deductions for chidren, while women do. So if you have a large family, if you’re wife’s making the money that’s great otherwise you will be left with very little income. Beginning tax rates start very low as well. If you have a private business you can usually put most of the income in your wife’s name.

Another point. In education, if you work for a goverment school, like Chinuch Atzmai, or a city school, married women with children get a standard 20% pay raise, as well as maternal benfits, which men don’t get.

Well, I’ve been living in Eretz Yisroel for about 30 years now. Every case is very unique. Before making any major changes in life, it’s good to look into all aspects in as much depth as possible.

    Here are some important questions:

    1. Parnussah – What is your present parnussah, and what will it be.

    2. Chinuch – Same questions

    3. Learning – How much and what quality of learning

    __________________________________________________________________

As I put purnassah in number 1, it is truly a serious factor, in it will affect shalom bayis, chinuch, and almost all other facets of life. So if you’ve passed that stage you could probably start looking into more depth. The cost of living is not low anymore, and it is constantly moving up.
