Mosh3, you are correct that in Hebrew it is called Amud Anan, the English name is Pillar of Defense (Pillar of cloud doesn’t sound so good in English).

Anyway, of course everyone is correct that we need to do teshuva, tzedaka and tefillah. But my point was what we should do in addition. For example, many people where I live are hosting Jews that live in southern Israel. If you live across the ocean and that isn’t possible there are other ways to reach out to fellows Jews and let them know you care. You can visit websites of businesses in southern Israel and buy their products. You can try to find pen(email)-pals (there are organizations that can help you find), or many other things you can do to show support.

Just a point of fact, the head of Ramaz (a VERY MO school) contacted Rabbi Pruzansky to discuss the report. Rabbi Pruzansky admitted that he never actually read such a report, but rather heard about a report. We know nothing of who conducted the survey; how it was conducted; who were the respondents, how large the sample was, what questions were asked or what definitions were used.

It might have been enough info for the rabbi to give mussar to his shul, but certainly not enough for us to pass judgement on an entire group of frum yidden.

This question was dealt with at length in ??”? ???? ?????? ??? ? (???? ????) ???? ??, He was asked about whether healthy Jewish men should try to get out of the requirement of serving in the German army (probably in the late 19th century). He didn’t think the answer was as simple as many comments here want to make the issue. He says, “???? ????? ???? ???? ????? ???? ?? ??? ????? ????” – For those interested – take a look at his teshuva inside.

147, it is a big zchus not to fight or make a break-off minyan and allow someone else to daven from the omud. don’t forget the origial minhag ashkenaz was that only one person say kaddish (still practiced in Breuers – and other places – today). Brov am hadras melech overrides someone’s “need” to daven from the omud or say kaddish.

Sam2 is correct. Having done a Bar Ilan search for ??? ?????? in all bavli, yerushalmi and midrash – I found the term mentioned once in the standard edition of vilna shas (??????? ?? ??). There are 2 more times he is mentioned (using that name, ???? ???? is mentioned 9 other times) in the per-censored edition (????? ?? ?? & ??????? ?? ??).

Rashi and the Ritva, however, do mention ?????? ??? ?????? a few times.

    1. Wolf is spot on.

    2. One of me rebbeim who learned in Lakewood many years ago asked Rav Aharon Kotler zt”l if he could wear his jacket on his shoulders on shabbos (there was no eruv). Rav Aharon said they used to wear their jackets like that in Slobodka and neither the Alter or Rav Moshe Mordechai indicated that there was any problem (i.e. it was fine – from both a musar and shabbos point of view)

The Frumguy – this is off topic, but you mention “chashuva” guys wear their Tzizis out (one of your examples). Why would that determine whether you are chashuv or not? I don’t because my family came form Lita, where that was never the minhag .yes, I know what the mishna brurah says, but I have heard from older rebbeim of mine who learned in Radin that nobody wore their tzizis out. I have heard the same about Mir, Telz and Slobodka.

I am not a big fan of the way daf yomi is learned today either, but I am not as cynical as longarekel either. There may be better ways for average balebatim to acquire torah knowledge but the daf yomi program has had a lot of success in getting people to be koveah itim (even people who you wouldn’t expect) and that is nothing to knock!

I would also like to point out that halacha l’mayse does not need to be the goal of your limud (it can be if you like). torah l’shma is learning for the sake of understanding the torah you are learning (at least that is how the nefesh hachaim defines it). If people are dedicated to learning pshat gemara, rashi, tosfos- or understanding the lomdus on the daf that is also great.

you can check wikipedia for this type of question.

“estimates of the size of the modern Karaite movement put the number at 4,000 Karaites in the United States, about 100 families in Istanbul, and over 40,000 in Israel, the largest communities being in Ramlah, Ashdod and Beer-Sheva.”

Other interesting facts in that article as well.

If it’s windy out it doesn’t matter what size yarmulka you are wearing! If you are running or playing ball it doesn’t matter what size yarmulka you are wearing!

And, deiyezooger, bobby pins work fine with short hair (unless you have a chasidishe haircut).

bottom line is that bobby pins are just not part of the modern day yeshivish uniform (no need to put down MO guys who want to make sure their’s stays on).

I saw this on revach.net: Rav Elyashiv said that since Crocs are worn all year round, you are not permitted to wear them on Tisha B’Av. Rav Moshe Shternbuch said that while technically you may wear them on Tisha B’Av, it is better not to. Similarly Rav Nissim Karelitz and Rav Meir Brandsdorfer held that it is not assur but Yirei Shamayim should not wear them.

quark2 – religious zionists in Israel are typically referring to HaRav Avraham Yitzchak Hacohen Kook when they talk about “The Rav”.

HaRav Aharon Lichtenstein was the Rosh Yeshiva of Yeshivat Har Etzion (now retired, one of his sons is now Rosh Yeshiva) and is recognized as a Gadol, but his style is more similar to his father-in-law (straight Lithuanian approach) than Rav Kook’s (which adds a more mystical, almost chasidic outlook).

    My .02 –

nice thought, I just want to add one point – you said, “Charosses must be of a thick consistency symbolic of the cement we were forced to mix.”

Keep in mind that Tosafos points on ??”? , based on a yerushalmi, that Charosses starts out thick but you need to add wine to it before the tibul (you can’t dip anything into a thick mixture) and this is zecher l’dam (the blood of the Jews). This strengthens Rav Freidlander’s idea of Hashem’s chesed in the midst of our suffering.

there are no blanket rules – you have to know your kid. if you force a kid to stay at the shabbos table and as a result he ends up hating shabbos – what have you accomplished? less than nothing.

you may want to find out why the kid doesn’t find sitting at the table enjoyable and make appropriate changes to your meal.

I didn’t change much. Although in EY there is a tendency to follow minhag haGra on certain things (but not all), for example the shir shel yom on yamim tovim is different, omitting v’shamru on Friday night, no tefillin on chol hamoed, even ashkenazim say ein kelokeinu/pitom haketores on weekdays, etc).

I am not sure where you live – but in my neighborhood I would say half the shuls daven ashkenaz (including mine) and half sfard.

apushatayid – they do not discuss cleaning the rest of the house, or other things. But I think you can easily be mechalayk. I would always want areas that I spend any time in to be clean and organized. And that is why I will clean my office, garage, attic, etc. But I don’t have the need to create a shabbos/yomtov ambiance in my work office. That I would only want to do where I live – which is why it makes sense to specify tablecloths which create that atmosphere (as opposed to simply vacuuming and tidying up).

But nevertheless, I guess we can apply the rule ??? ??? ?????? ?? ???? ?????? ??? ?????? ??, and if Jews cover their tables their tables – then that would seem to be proper (which is how the pri megadim seems to conclude).

Helpful – I am not sure why you have to call all research rubbish. If people spend time effort (out of love of torah) to find correct versions of various texts – why is that rubbish? After all many rishonim spend lots of time figuring out the proper girsa of the gemara, midrash (or whatever they are explaining) & of course the GRA and the Bach spent enormous efforts in this regard as well. If people have available today texts that were unknown a few hundred years ago – why is that rubbish? Do you ignore all comments of the Meiri because the full text of his chidushim were uncovered around 50 years ago (aside from whatever is quoted in the shita mekubetzes)?

the gemara in bava basra daf 57 says that if someone opts to walk near the river where the women wash their clothing – if there was another way to go he is called a rasha even if he closes his eyes.

based on that it would seem that removing your glasses is no solution if you could find a separate beach/pool.

The Brisker Rov, ZT”L, asked an interesting question about the our obligation to believe that the Moshiach can come everyday. Chazal tell us that Eliyahu HaNavi will arrive 3 days before to announce the imminent arrival of Moshiach – so if that is true how can I believe that he can come today? Eliyahu hasn’t come yet?! He concludes by saying Eliyahu will have to answer this question when he comes, but we are still obligated to believe that he can come everyday. Has anyone heard any answers to the Brisker Rov’s question?

Our tafkid it to learn torah and do mitzvos – when Hashem wants to bring the Moshiach He will. We need to believe that it can be today, but aside from that I fail to see the point of all this speculation.

sammyjoe, what exactly do you mean by, “Though the internet is NOT a place to discuss torah”? why not? I mean I wouldn’t get a psak halacha from an anonymous person in the YWN Coffee Room, but it is a great place to explore ideas and share thoughts. All technologies were new at one time and feared. The Internet can be used for tumah, rachmana l’tzlan, but it also has the potential for tons of good.

azi – while it is true that this minhag is mentioned in shas or other major sources in rishonim. nevertheless, r’ Maimon the father of the Rambam says that no minhag should be taken lightly. he specifies “even a cute minhag like eating sufganiot” because this is what was done by earlier generations.

I agree health comes first, so if your doctor says no latkes or donuts then you can’t eat. but there is no minhag to eat baked potato-pancakes on chanukkah (unless you really like them – there really is no point in discussing recipes for non-fried latkes.)

Going back to the issue of the number of dates, here is a well known story about the famous posek, Rabbi Moshe Bick, who noticed an increase in family discord of newlyweds that led to divorce. He let it be known that he strongly suggested that when a boy and girl date in pursuit of marriage that they date at least eight times to become more acquainted with each other and thus minimize “surprises” after marriage. When this came to the ears of the Holy Admor of Satmar, he sharply disagreed, saying, “‘Katzti v’chayai mipnei bnos CHES,” I am disgusted with meeting girls EIGHT times.” Upon hearing this, Rabbi Bick responded to the Rebbe, that although he is much subservient to him, nevertheless, the Rebbe is honoured with “sidur kidushin” while Rabbi Bick is honoured with “sidur gitin.” Being exposed to the issues involved, he asked the Rebbe to acquiesce to his opinion. The Rebbe accepted this.

Who wasn’t learning enough to protect us from the crusaders? Rabbienu Tam? The other Baalay HaTosefos? Did the Ramban not learn enough to protect him from being expelled from spain. Did Abarbanel not learn enough to protect us from the Spanish Expulsion?? Obviously we need to do what Yakkov Avinu did & we must have a war strategy as well!! That is the natural order that Hashem set up and Chazal established for us!
