The OP’s question, really, is what is the heter for this board to even exist.

So, then, being Maavir Sedra is a halachic obligation, if the S”A cites it. BTW, what is the etymology of “Maavir Sedra”?

Also, isn’t there a shitta that it can be finished later on Shabbos or even Motzei Shabbos?

Yes, it is off the wall as popa said. And a desire for “intellectual stimulation” shouldn’t override Shulchan Aruch.

jl: If you are referring to the time he was wandering from 13th to 18th Avenue, he may well have given no signs he was lost and just continued on his way without any indication he needed assistance. Until he met the monster, who may have been the first person he let know he needed help. So please stop blaming Klal Yisroel.

The problem applies to online shopping too, as many otherwise innocent e-commerce websites use untznius pictures to entice male shoppers.

Is saying it every week a chiyuv?

If I recall correctly, it should be said between Wednesday and the following Sunday. Or am I mixing the days up?

Also, aren’t there two different shittas whether to say it pasuk by pasuk or to say it parsha by parsha? (Or is the latter the lazy way?)

Why then may a man walk in the street? Only because he has no choice.

You do have a choice not to patronize the retailers or products that have this issue. So that heter wouldn’t be applicable here.

zsdad: Yes, he was a really big rabbi. And this is what Rav Shach wrote about the State (Letters 1:2):

Rav Shach writes that in the Bais Din Shel Maalah, when they ask him why he was against Zionism, he will not need to answer in detail – all he will do, he said, was he will point to the Chofetz Chaim and say “I am agaisnt Zionism because he was against it!”

    A) Because of the situation you described in the OP.

    B) Because you brought this subject up for discussion.

in reply to: Butterfly Flap Halfway Across World May Be Cause of Hurricane Irene #1030985

Check the Wikipedia article “Butterfly effect”:

In chaos theory, the butterfly effect is the sensitive dependence on initial conditions; where a small change at one place in a nonlinear system can result in large differences to a later state. For example, the presence or absence of a butterfly flapping its wings could lead to creation or absence of a hurricane.

Although the butterfly effect may appear to be an esoteric and unusual behavior, it is exhibited by very simple systems: for example, a ball placed at the crest of a hill might roll into any of several valleys depending on slight differences in initial position.

The term “butterfly effect” itself is related to the meteorological work of Edward Lorenz, who popularized the term.

The butterfly effect is most familiar in terms of weather; it can easily be demonstrated in standard weather prediction models…

Yup, looks like it was a total bust. A big tado over nothing. A little wind, a little rain, vzeh hu. Not much to talk about other than a bunch of hype.

The city probably used this Tropical Storm (it wasn’t even a hurricane by time it reached NY) as a drill for future preparedness.

Azoi: I’ve come up with a potential brainstorm solution for your dilemma. Tell your daughter to ask your non-blood relative that she is married to for a divorce. This way she can buy the house post-divorce, insuring he has no interest in it. After all, even if it is in her name only, as long as she is married to this non-blood relative guy that you don’t want his name on the deed, it is always possible divorce court will grant him a partial or full interest in the home, since it was purchased during their marriage.

The only possible glitch is, that since halachicly your daughter is not entitled to a ‘get’ just because she wants one (there is no divorce-on-demand in Judaism), he may justifiably refuse to give her a divorce under halacha, and he would be within his full halachic rights to do so.

LMA: You make your points very well. It should be noted that Mesilas Yeshorim is an almost compulsory learning in Litvish Yeshivas. It is a Yeshiva standard.

It’s also important to note that Chareidi encompasses a lot more than just the Litvish. It includes Yekkes, Chasidism, and others too.
