    So Right –

    “Driving is natural for boys.”

Is that why Male & Female given the same age, the Male would have higher insurance rates?

WIY – I dont doubt that making ends meet in todays day and age is hard.

However, all to often there is this attitude of “tell your kids tuition committees to fly a kite”. There is almost nothing you can do for your child like a good quality Jewish education.

So pay the tuition, have Hakaras Hatov and pinch the budget somewhere else.

“Regarding your point about making kids suffer”

Actually, I wasnt making the point about OTD kids, it was about the soldiers. The 18/19 year old kids who are being killed and injured and scarred emotionally by what they see. I just don’t know that it’s all worth it.

chesed – I believe your example would fall under my statement of “should we feed them every shmutz in the world? No”

I have one word for you. Balance.

Growing – “but i guarantee you the music in their stores would have only been jewish”

I am going to disagree with you. The Jews in Egypt were applauded for keeping 3 things: names, dress, language.

They were cited for visiting the circuses and theatres of the Mitzrim. I think it would be safe to say they were enjoying their music.

WOW! what a story. I envy your Olam Haba.

In term of Shidduchim I would probably stick with Baalei Teshuva. They probably understand what you have gone through and can relate. Are you “bound” to that? Not at all. But I think it will be easier on you in the long run. I would suggest you get in touch with the Rebbitzens, and tell them exactly what you want. There are a lot of great Baalei Teshuva out there who are big Talmidei Chachomim, believe me its not “settling”.

    Hatzlocha with everything!

I dont think that keeping your children so sheltered that they dont know what is going on in the out side world is the the best method of Jewish parenting. Does this mean that you should feed them every shmutz in the world? No.

At the same time fortify them with knowledge. Teach them the beauty of yiddishkeit, what it means to be a Torah Jew. How lucky WE are! Sheltering children to the point of ignorance is what usually backfires.

Well, technically you still weigh the same there is just no gravitational pull.

Whereas, you dont have to move to the moon, you can just tell people that you really dont weigh all that much the earth just has a stroner gravitational pull on you.

SJS – If you have found girls that find practical hashkafa and mussar from a textual Rambam I’m not going to argue, In my experience that isnt the case.

Pascha – The only reason why people care is because we are trapped in a society that is obsessed with “Perfection”

If you are of European decent there is a good chance that you have a recessive gene somewhere, or else they wouldnt have started the program because it wouldnt have been an issue.

My Great-Aunt married her first cousin and they had four children who had and died of Niemann-Pick.

Do I have the gene? Maybe. Do I care? No. As long as you dont have the disease, who cares?! We now have this incredible orginization that will hopefully make these dreadful diseases obsolete in the Jewish Community.

Shaal Avicha V’yagedchu Zkeynecha V’yomru Lach – so much of what we do is based on mesorah. And really, how is knowing a Rambam fortifying you against America today?

I am all for girls learning, but the need PRACTICAL hashkafic and mussar lessons.

“The Torah tells us that a man has to leave his father and mother when he gets married and cling to his wife”

    1. This does not mean in a country 3,000 miles a way.

    2. You are still Muchuyav in Kibbud Av V’em. If you think that can be accomplished with a phone call once a week and a birthday card, thats a whole diff issue.

“Why do we seem to view Torah and Olam Haba as obligatory, despite the yisurim, and Eretz Yisrael as optional”

Eretz Yisroel isn’t optional it was promised to us by Bris Bain Habisorim. Our forefathers have suffered a heck of a lot for E”Y. Do I think we should be sacraficing our young innocent children at the altar known as Israel? NO 1,000X!

Before the Zionists caused the massive flow of Jews to Israel there were hardly any Jews living there (ironically, my grandfather x10 generations were there). I forget which Gaon said, “Ki M’Bari Tetzi Torah U’Dvar Hashem M’Utranto” Do you think they weren’t aware of Kedushas E”Y? Is this suddenly a new thing? No! It’s the Zionistic movement E”Y isnt even a Frum state, it is as peverse as it is Kadosh (which is the most unfortunate thing of all).

theprof1 – cute reasoning but not entirely correct (not entirely false either)

For example: Yavne Teachers Seminary (shout out!) granted that is meant to churn out some teachers, so you wont find any Home Economics there (or any form of fun for that matter)

BY Intensive – Is also a place to go to become a teacher. Home Economics? Prolly not.

BYA (E”Y), BJJ, Bnos Chava, Hadar…. They dont claim to perfect the craft of teaching. It is 13th grade (for 20K a pop). If you can spend a 1/3 of the year on Tiyulim certainly they can spend some time teaching the girl how to cook.

BP Totty – Im going to disagree with you, the diff is in the oil temp (oven het? what donuts are baked?!) and the yeast. You have to get the yeast to activate perfectly (something I am still working on) and having the oil to be at a constant even heat and having the entire donut hit it at the same time is what makes the bakeries donuts come out so perfect.

“But don’t get me started on the topic of women drivers.”

Because men are so hot behind the wheel. I dont disagree that many woman cause problems in traffic but this usually because they are spaced out or multi tasking, agreed its annoying. Men can be just as bad. Dont get me started about driving in Boro Park its enough to turn you into an Anti-Semite.

I think the reason woman/men dont drive in Israel is because its actually Sacanas Nifashos to drive there not spiritual, physical. Unless you have reflexes like a ninja.

These are DAIRY (for Pareve swap milk for soy milk and butter for margarine)

    For doughnuts

    1 (1/4-oz) package active dry yeast (2 1/2 teaspoons)

3 1/4 cups all-purpose flour plus additional for sprinkling and rolling out dough

1 cup whole milk at room temperature

1/2 stick (1/4 cup) unsalted butter, softened

    3 large egg yolks

    2 tablespoons sugar

    1 1/2 teaspoons salt

    1/2 teaspoon cinnamon

About 10 cups vegetable oil for deep frying

    For glaze

    1/4 cup boiling-hot water

    5 teaspoons instant-espresso powder or instant-coffee granules

    1 1/2 cups confectioners sugar

    1 tablespoon light corn syrup

    1/4 teaspoon pure vanilla extract

    1/4 teaspoon salt

About 1/4 cup sanding sugar (optional)

Special equipment: a stand mixer fitted with paddle attachment; a 3-inch and a 1-inch round cookie cutter; a deep-fat thermometer

    Make dough:

Stir together yeast and warm water in a small bowl until yeast is dissolved. Let stand until foamy, about 5 minutes. (If yeast doesn’t foam, discard and start over with new yeast.)

Mix together flour, milk, butter, yolks, sugar, salt, cinnamon, and yeast mixture in mixer at low speed until a soft dough forms. Increase speed to medium-high and beat 3 minutes more.

Scrape dough down side of bowl (all around) into center, then sprinkle lightly with flour (to keep a crust from forming). Cover bowl with a clean kitchen towel (not terry cloth) and let dough rise in a draft-free place at warm room temperature until doubled in bulk, 1 1/2 to 2 hours. (Alternatively, let dough rise in bowl in refrigerator 8 to 12 hours.)

Turn dough out onto a lightly floured surface and roll out with a lightly floured rolling pin into a 12-inch round (1/2 inch thick). Cut out as many rounds as possible with 3-inch cutter, then cut a hole in center of each round with 1-inch cutter and transfer doughnuts to a lightly floured large baking sheet. Cover doughnuts with a clean kitchen towel and let rise in a draft-free place at warm room temperature until slightly puffed, about 30 minutes (45 minutes if dough was cold when cutting out doughnuts). Do not reroll scraps.

    Make glaze:

Stir together boiling-hot water and espresso powder in a medium bowl until powder is dissolved, then stir in confectioners sugar, corn syrup, vanilla, and salt until smooth.

Dip doughnuts into glaze, turning to coat well, then put on a rack set in a shallow baking pan (to catch any drips). While glaze is wet, sprinkle doughnuts with sanding sugar (if using). Let stand until glaze is set, about 20 minutes.
