Whatever the reason for the hurricane, I would like to see the Rabbanim get up and make a push for Teshuva and to stop the Pritzus, talking in shul and what not. Time to go back to the old days when the Rabbi was boss of his Shul and peopled listened when he said something. I would love to see a crackdown.
those times never existed, From the Haskallah to the reform and general secular jews. Rabannim havent really been in charge in a real long time
zahavasdadParticipantReading most Jewish books put out by most jewish publishers is NOT the way to learn english. Most of these publishing houses do not have proper copy editors to check proper grammar and more importantly dont seem to care about proper rules how to write in english (Sentance and Paragraph development) Story developement etc
zahavasdadParticipantNobody knows the early voting in Ohio. Its all speculation there. You are not required to register for a party there
Other states Like NV, FL, NC they know by party registration
zahavasdadParticipantMost Charedim do not Like Chabad because of the Messanism.
Oorah raises money for Yeshiva Tuition not really for outreach to “teens in crisis”
The only acceptable activity for many Charedi kids is Learning. Not to say that learning isnt important, but what if a Kid Hates Gemorah. Telling the kid to learn even more Gemorah doesnt always produce a love of learning and can foster a hate in learning.
I think many Chassidic communities even ban Ball Playing DURING THE WEEK so playing sports like basketball can be an unacceptable activity
zahavasdadParticipantName one organzation in the Charedi world meant to combat OTD and I dont mean forcing people to conform, that doesnt work for everyone. Name some organizations that are the antidote to the Anti-Kiruv organization
And it does seem everyone knows about it, Its no secret what its name it and its even been on the Zev Brenner Show.
Organizations like NCSY do combat OTD, what is the Charedi equivilant of NCSY.

November 4, 2012 11:59 am at 11:59 am in reply to: Shocking Study of Modern Orthodox OTD Rate #941602zahavasdadParticipantAt least the MO will admit there is a problem, the Charedim seem to bury this under a rock even though most seem to have heard of the Anti-Kiruv organization
zahavasdadParticipantEverybody was affected in some way, Even if you lived in areas relatively untouched you might have relatives in areas such as Far Rockaway and they came to your already cramped quarters
November 1, 2012 10:56 pm at 10:56 pm in reply to: Shocking Study of Modern Orthodox OTD Rate #941587zahavasdadParticipantI think by the time the people find that orgazination I think its too late, they have been so turned off by Yiddishkeit, it might be hopeless.
1: build the ghetto walls even higher and employ a 1984 style level of surveliance on the inhabitants
This is already done and it doesnt work, they mostly threaten not to let your kids in school
November 1, 2012 1:54 pm at 1:54 pm in reply to: Should Jews Give Candy This Coming Monday Night? #1105088zahavasdadParticipantThis year it was irrelevant because it was basically cancelled
However in normal years its not right to put your beliefs on some little kid who only wants candy. If dont want to answer the door and keep the lights off (Like you are not home) that is fine , but its very different to open the door and tell some little girl dressed as cinderella, I dont celebrate Halloween and I have no candy for you. Its a tremondous Chilul Hashem to do that.
Again dont want to be bothered, Shut off all lights and pretend you are not home and if they ring the door bell dont answer
zahavasdadParticipantWithout defending the Anti-Kiruv organization. There needs to be a way for those who cannot live the Chassidic lifestyle to somewhat stay in the fold without them leaving 100%, It seems everyone knows that organizations name so they are fairly well known.
I know many love that lifestyle , but obviously some dont and one of them became a famous author by writing how much she hated it. So there is some issue there too.

I hate Paris with a Passion, I refuse to go there ever again, but its not because of the jews there.
Ive been around a bit and they were by far the most welcoming that Ive ever met. Definatly more than the British jews that I met and I certainly have a lot more in common with them than the french jews (Not just language, but ancestry as British jews are Ashkenazic and French jews are mostly Sephardic)
I was invited by a stranger for Shabbos in London though (I was not in Paris for Shabbos so this never came up)
They just seemed more friendly and tried to help me even with the Language problem (Not all French jews speak Hebrew, many just speak french)
October 31, 2012 11:12 pm at 11:12 pm in reply to: Heartwarming, inspiring stories of Jewish community #1023309zahavasdadParticipantI was in Paris and I dont speak french at all. France is mostly sephardic today and you will meet jews from places you dont normally meet them from Like Algeria , Libya and Tunisia.
Again I met a jew there who did not speak english and I do not speak french. We made very good friends and conversation in Hebrew. The Jews of Paris are the most friendly and warm that Ive ever met
October 31, 2012 12:02 pm at 12:02 pm in reply to: Shocking Study of Modern Orthodox OTD Rate #941574zahavasdadParticipantThe director of the Anti-Kiruv organization has said most of the people that go there are Chassidic although they are getting more and more Yeshivish
zahavasdadParticipantAnd when did you speak to Hashem that he told you his reasons?
zahavasdadParticipantRav Shach for sure did not lift the Charem at least on Chabad
October 29, 2012 8:38 pm at 8:38 pm in reply to: Heartwarming, inspiring stories of Jewish community #1023290zahavasdadParticipantAurora
I was in Barcelona, I speak Some Spanish and Hebrew
Some was trying to ask me what was down a certain path and I tried to answer in Spanish, they did not understand, I then tried to answer in English as thats generally the universal language and they did not understand.
They then walked away not knowing the answer and I heard them speak to each other in Hebrew. I then was able to answer them in Hebrew and they wondered how I knew it.
Of course they knew I was american as I speak it with an american accent. They then invited me to Isarel to visit them
zahavasdadParticipantI have a friend who is a Rabbi , He got his simicha from YU.
He got a job at a Satmar Yeshiva, The kids used to call him a Goy
October 29, 2012 2:06 pm at 2:06 pm in reply to: Please be careful everyone on the East Coast! #901168zahavasdadParticipantI am amazed that some live in a mandatory evacuation area and have not left.
Imagine if you are stuck and need to be resued. What a Chilul Hashem that would be and then some would claim Anti-Semitism when they werent rescued first.
You are potentially causing harm to others if they must rescue you
zahavasdadParticipantThe Vilna Gaon considered Chassidus Apikoros
zahavasdadParticipantStorm is supposed to really hit later..Its calm now
zahavasdadParticipantI think most hold today the suicide is caused by mental illness and its probably ok to say mishayos and bury in a regular part of the cemetary
zahavasdadParticipantThis bickering is ridiculous and pointless. In 30 years, there will be no more MO young people since all the kids won’t be frum, and MO will be relegated to a few ill attended shuls of old people in formerly frum neighborhoods like Lawrence and Woodmere.
And then the Charedim will turn on each other The Yeshivish and Chassidim excommunicating each other, just like the good old days
October 28, 2012 3:14 pm at 3:14 pm in reply to: How Many Read the Coffee Room, But Do Not Post? #920481zahavasdadParticipantMore than you can imagine, And they read and quote from it all the time , especially the more outlandish quotes.
Thats why its important to be carefule what you post here, even if you think it, it doesnt mean you should post it on the internet
October 28, 2012 12:15 pm at 12:15 pm in reply to: Shocking Study of Modern Orthodox OTD Rate #941535zahavasdadParticipantThere are others, however, who “pick and choose”.
This includes things like men going to broadway shows (they earn the halachic status of rasha, liChol haDeios, unless it’s an all-male show) and (married) women not covering their hair at all, going mixed swimming, et al. Not to mention other hataras issurim. If, one generation later, this group is at 50% (of whom are still either MO or else moved on to traditional orthodox), that’s not exactly shocking, as the above stories from those on campus and in schools indicate. Hashem yishmor.
Now MO are Rashim.
And what do you call people who go to Secular Court to fight over an inheritance.
zahavasdadParticipantPeople are quoting a certain blog about this “study” I wonder how many would read todays entry and comment on it.
October 26, 2012 1:10 pm at 1:10 pm in reply to: Gift for Jewish, intermarried, but interested preceptor #901246zahavasdadParticipantWho is the Jewish Partner, If the woman is jewish and there are Kids. I think the answer is very different than if the man is jewish and there are kids
zahavasdadParticipantIt also says in Sefer HaChinuch perek 239 that you should give someone tochacha privately and in a nice way; but if they don’t listen to you, then you should embarrass them in public so that they will do teshuvah.
This truly is bad advice . Embarrasing someone in public may very well backfire. What is more dangerous , A lion or a wounded Lion. A wounded Lion can fire back at you especially with the internet . You can fire back very cheaply and get lots of coverage, Likely more coverage than whatever transgression was committed.
zahavasdadParticipantAnd one wonders why there is a Shidduch crisis, Instead of trying to find fault with people, How about look for the positive in people.
October 25, 2012 11:08 am at 11:08 am in reply to: Shocking Study of Modern Orthodox OTD Rate #941487zahavasdadParticipant@ Borough Park Mensch
The People I am talking about do not live in Borough Park, they live in more outlining areas. There are plenty of Young Israels that are Yeshivish. If you go for example to the Young Israel of Far Rockaway, its more or less Yeshivish (not 100%, but pretty close)
Go to a Young Israel in an outlying area or out of town, Maybe one with 50 familes. Many do not have daily minyans because they cant get it.
The definition of MO is very broad and Ill agree with the statment some on MO are more Modern than orthodox. And I suspect the study is likely more referring to those people.
zahavasdadParticipantIts best to develop a thicker skin, certain comments reflect more badly on the poster than anything else.
This site gets tons of viewers and whatever is said is for all to see. You cant hide what you post on the internet
zahavasdadParticipantModern Orthodox were never on the derech if someone knows better then not to go against Hashem and he does it anyway then he is off the Derech Hashem.
A modern orthodox person is worse then some1 who is completly off (if they were never on to begin with) bc it seems that modern orthodox ppl know the right things to do and the proper ways to serve Hashem but they choose to live a Modern Orthodox lifestlye as oppose to a regular Orthodox lifestyle they choose to be off the derech knowingly…Hashem should have mercy on the modern orthodox people that know they’re doing wrong and continue living there foolish ways living in denial of true service to Hashem…God willing they will realize that they are fooling no one except themselves and start to serve Hashem properly.
Transport back in time 250 years and the Vilna Gaon said the same thing about Chassidism
zahavasdadParticipantWhat is truly sad about this , Girls feel almost entitled to go to Seminary for a year and many Parents cannot afford the $20K-$30K cost of this and the girls feel left out especially if many of their friends are going.
They then put their hopes on a raffle ticket that they can win the trip as this may be their only way of going.
October 24, 2012 12:39 am at 12:39 am in reply to: Shocking Study of Modern Orthodox OTD Rate #941404zahavasdadParticipantAlot of people who go to MO schools are not religious and in fact many people who go to MO shuls like Young Israels and the like are not reglious either, but they are Pro-relgious. Meaning they like the religion but have limits.
The reason more Charedi dont leave is because they are more forced to stay. If someone wants to leave MO they can do it and there isnt much penalty, however in the Charedi world women are married as teenagers and frequently have children before they are 20 and the men are also married quite young and there are children as well.
When there are spouces and young children its much harder to leave. Also MO families dont usually shun OTD kids where Charedim (especially Chassidic do) so if you leave you are really on your own.
MO’s can also function in regular society so its not so hard to leave, if you are charedi you really cant function too easily and blend it
zahavasdadParticipantBTW if you win, you have to pay TAX on the Prize.
If you win some cheap prize at a chinese auction like a bunch of museum admissions, I wouldnt worry about the tax, But this prize has significant value and you will be responsible to report the prize as income.
It might be worth $20K-$30K and you will owe state and Federal tax on it.
October 22, 2012 11:14 pm at 11:14 pm in reply to: Ball tshuva girl who's father is not jewish #900586zahavasdadParticipantI heard recently of a story of a Girl whose father was not jewish and after the divorce, the mother married a Chabadnick.
The father who had joint custody would bring his daughter to church on Sunday and there was nothing the mother or step father could do
zahavasdadParticipantThere is a difference between talking about someone whose brother became a reform rabbi and someone who as a teenager went to Yankee games and maybe went a little OTD.
The former has no relevance to the Gadols life and how to get Chizuk from that and the latter shows how people can have struggles in life and come out stronger from them.
zahavasdadParticipantAurora, The single continent theory is generally accepted
And if you look at Africa and South America, it sort of looks like they were connected at one point like a puzzle piece
zahavasdadParticipantYiddish is Ashkenaz Laguage, Sephard mean SPAIN. So if you are Sepahardic the proper language to speak is Spanish not Yiddish.
By enforcing your views on others you are showing your hated for all non-ashkenazic jews whose mesorah is not to speak yiddish.
zahavasdadParticipantThe idea that the Dinosaurs died in the Mabul comes from evangelical christians
zahavasdadParticipantI dont think the shoes was a joke, Some rebbes have declared that their followers wear a certain color shirt, A certain hat etc
Why wouldnt they also declare on shoes. I hardly ever see some from some groups were crocs or sneakers
zahavasdadParticipantMost Shiurim are given in ENGLISH not Yiddish, I supposed if you rarely venture out of such places like williamsburg you would not realize this, but most are in english. Most jews speak english (probably more than even Hebrew).
And I dont have hate for people who speak yiddish, My mother spoke it first (I dont know if she speaks it anymore as I dont think she has spoken it much in a real long time) and I never really figured out if my father speaks it or not.
zahavasdadParticipantAnd BTW I was in Spain and some people tried to ask me directions, I tried to answer them in Spanish and they did not understand. I tried to answer in english and they also did not understand and I gave up.
Then all of a sudden I heard them speak Hebrew and I was able to help them. They were shocked that someone in Spain spoke Hebrew (With an american accent of course) and then they were super friendly and they invited me to Israel (Which most Israelis do when they realize you are jewish and speak Hebrew)
zahavasdadParticipantYiddish is useless for anyone. There is not reason anyone should learn it.
If you want to live in the USA, Learn English, There is no reason any jew should not learn english. Unfortunatly My great-grandfather never could learn english so I could not speak to him. I seriously doubt my mother has spoken yiddish in decades and it was her first language.
And frankly after seeing people here talk about it, I made it my business to listen more carefully to people who speak it now , and I understand it better than I realized. They do not speak proper yiddish today. Listen to proper yiddish and listen to what is spoken today and its not yiddish. I dont know what it is , but its not yiddish.
I have been to Paris, and I met some jews there who did not speak English, They were SEPHARDIM and they spoke Hebrew, I spoke to them just fine. If I really need to speak to another jew in a common laguage, More jews speak Hebrew than speak Yiddish, and in fact more jews speak ENGLISH than speak Yiddish.
zahavasdadParticipantI cant stand Coffee, but if you like it Gezah D’Heh.
There is no Halacha that says you have to eat bread and water. Eat and drink what you like and if a Shot of Johnny Walker gets you up in the morning . Enjoy it
October 19, 2012 5:33 pm at 5:33 pm in reply to: What is your favorite brand of instant coffee? #902170zahavasdadParticipantCoffee is just nasty
zahavasdadParticipantMany of the Jewish Schools teach Spanish or French besides Hebrew.
Yiddish spoken today is not real yiddish its some mangling of classic yiddish and english .
Spanish is much more useful to speak than yiddish and it can be fun. It shocks some of them when I say things like Bolsa Por Favor (Bag Please)
zahavasdadParticipantResh Lakish was a Robber and became a Amorah. Do you have any less respect for him because he was a Robber at an earlier time in his life
zahavasdadParticipantI am looking to start a new frum magazine, and want to know ways on how to get it started. Does anyone have any leads or advice?
Raise Capital and start selling Ads
zahavasdadParticipantThe Idea of these “Biographies” is we should learn the proper way to live from the way the Gedolim lived their lives.
The problem is the lives as portayed in these books is a fantasy in itself and people are trying to emulate a life that did not actually exist.
And when people fail, they might feel downtroden and not try to get up.
Its lot easier to get up knowing that once or twice someone greater than me failed and was able to recover. There is much more Chizuk in that , than someone who went to Chedar at 3, Learned entire tanach by 7 and learned Shas for the first time by 13 and learned from Sunup to Sundown and learned with his feet in cold water so not to fall asleep.
