Playing: Machlokes between the Charaidim in EY (such as Rav Shteinman) and America (such as Rav Reuven Feinstein). There was actually a big commotion regarding this at one of the Agudah conventions from what I hear.

Watching prof sports: On TV? see TV. In person? see Going to a game.

going to a game: My Rov and Rebbe disagree on this one. IIRC there was also a Chinuch roundtable regarding this question. Personally I think it depends on one’s motives (from what I have discussed with both my Rov & Rebbe).

Matthew 5:38. I want your wallet, and your pants.

    No?

If you don’t believe, why should I (and walk away). If he comes back, ask for wallet & pants again.

Probably a leaky toilet. Check that and then come back.

Also you can see if there are any slow leaks in the house by looking for water damage.

    Good luck.

    NoNonsense:

Of course there is a concept of Shoel Eitza. I do it all the time, with both my Rov and a close Rebbe of mine.

The difference is they know my personal situation, I try to give them as many details as possible, and they can give me an eitza that fits my personal circumstances.

On the other hand, asking a “Gadol” “what should I do?” without any background, without knowing your personality, and without any information regarding what the real issues might be is GIGO.

The other criteria is that both of these Rabbonim have told me numerous times “ask an expert”. If they don’t know, or think others would have better insight, they don’t try to hide it.

Is that “Da’as Torah”? Maybe. But it is not the normal usage in the Yeshiva World.

    Zees:

Truthfully, I’m not sure what your complaint is (and you have been coming on strong recently).

To elaborate on what I said:

The system of asking Rabbonim whether I should buy a stock or not, or take my wife out for dinner or stay for seder, or even if I should stay in Kollel or not (as long as the question is not Halachic) (What some call Da’as Torah) makes little sense. Even if the Da’as is Kulo Torah, it knows little about stocks (Unless the Gadol is claiming to have had a Nevuah, of course). And even if he did, who says the advice is good for you, with all of your personal quirks (the general you). Which is why even in something the Rov does know somewhat about, we have GIGO.

What you are talking about is only in Halacha. In Halacha, we follow the Mesorah given to our Rabbonim from their Rabbaim up to Moshe from Hashem at Sinai.

As far as ?? ??? ???? ????? ????? ????? ????? ???? ????, note the word ????, not business advice or minhag or shaving heads. No one will claim shaving heads is actual halacha.

    Zees:

Not to open a can of worms, but it can be strongly argued that the whole concept of “Da’as Torah” (whatever that is) is K’neged Yiddishkeit. One must draw a fine line (as Mod80 & I did above) between following Gedolim and worshiping them, C”V.

Now I don’t know the specfics here, but I like what chocandpatience added:

A Rabbi is not ‘the only way to G-d’ and I don’t think anyone would claim that. The Torah is the only way to G-d. We need our Rabbis to teach us the correct Torah way.

We have a Mesorah, and believe there is “Torah Shel Ba’al Peh”. Anyone who claims they can bypass the Rabbonim completely is no different than those who followed Tzaddok & Baiysus in the times of the Mishna.

Mod80: I’m sorry you feel that way 🙂

However, even if a Gadol has Da’as Torah (whatever that is), he is not omniscent. If he is not aware that (in this case) the husband would be mad (if he would have been), we can say that if he would have known, he would not have made the suggestion.

Unless of course you are suggesting that Gedolim ARE omniscent?

The din of not walking behind a woman is specificly 4 Amos (as not to be in her “space”)(for those who are Makpid on it). So a simple solution would be to open & follow after a slight delay.

Anyway, do you respect him knowing that he has a good reason why he did what he did? If so, then what is the difference?

Thats exactly why Im torn. He would NOT be upset! BUT despite him respecting Rebbes, he very much looks up to his Roshei Yeshiva and Gedolim who dont think shaving is necessary and he’d just think Im going overboard. I feel he’d look at me funny. Hard to explain.

So discuss with your husband and follow his guidance.

The author says that a talmid chochom related to him that the Chazon Ish was only matir powdered milk for children, at a time that milk was scarce, at the beginning of Israel’s statehood.

Goes back into L’chatchila vs. B’dieved. If B’dieved it is Mutar, then that is what it is (for those who are willing to go B’dieved). I don’t think (though I may be wrong) the Chazon Ish would have said children can drink camel’s milk.

If HKBH takes such a view that he’ll allow a husband to overrule a wife’s neder (which is otherwise an issur d’oreisah) with regard to such matters, surely He’ll overlook it if the OP doesn’t want to shave her head because it will cause shalom bayis problems in her home.

    Another proof is from Sotah.

If it will make your husband upset, don’t do it.

    Sacrilege:

Not sure where you are going with your first paragraph. Please explain.

(I assume you are a woman?, and would like your opinion as well).

As per the second paragraph, I have no issue with how the lady was dressed, had she not been frum. I question if it would be like someone telling me that my fly is open, or my undershirt is sticking out. Or as a frum male, I should be more sensitive in speaking to a woman regarding a dressing issue (which is what I decided, and MII basically said the same thing).

APY: I don’t believe it was a “malfunction”. I also don’t believe the woman knew about it; she was otherwise tzanua, and it was not necessarily (although she may have) the type of thing that she would have noticed when leaving her home. (it also may have changed from when she left home to being very noticable in the store).

Shlishi: Rav Wolfson is noted for saying that looking the first time is not what is Assur; it is when you look the second time that it becomes Histaclus.

What is the halocha on eating chometz DURING THE YEAR, that was possibly not sold over Pesach?

    Is it halachically ‘inedible’?

I’m not a Rov, but you said the word “possibly”, i.e. a Safek. Since Chametz after Pesach is a Drabbonon, we would apply Safek D’Rabbonon L’Kula. Furthermore, if it was not you yourself who owned the Chometz over Pesach, or if you did Bitul, there is further room to be Maikel, as there are many Rishonim who hold that The Gezairah of R’ Shimon doesn’t apply.

Ask your LOR for actual Halacha.

Yuharu/Ga’aava is what it is called in Halacha when you show yourself to be Machmir like a Da’as Yochid without being on the level of doing so, like wearing Rabbanu Tam Tefilin without being a “chosid”.

hate to make it seem like I’m doing a multi-thread attack but…

making a blanket statement like “it is assur” is misleading if it is not universally accepted by torah authorities as bottom line halacha, and not qualified as such.

Saying there is a ma’an di’amar that says it’s assur is a more accurate, honest way to present one’s point.

Otherwise, if it’s not in the S”A, and not universally accepted, it is a chumra. All over rishonim and achronim it discusses being “machmir for the daas yachid”. Machmir. from the same word as chumra. Meaning not required.

Like this. We have gedorim of P’sak which are transmitted from the previous generations. Blanket statements are for those who don’t know how to Pasken.

All over rishonim and achronim it discusses being “machmir for the daas yachid”.

They call in Yuhara, or Ga’ava in most cases.

    Of course it is different.

Group Think is not by “peers”, it is the force of a homogenous group to remain so, with dissenters refusing to dissent to maintain homogeneity. It is everyone inside the group thinking the same, and discounting those outside the group, thereby blocking any possible critical thought regarding the actions of the group.

Peer pressure it to get others who DON’T think like the group to agree to what the group says, or at least do like the group.

I think it is the Mesilas Yeshorim that says that a slight bit of letzanus can contradict one hundred proofs.
