    jewishfeminist02 – I can’t agree more!

MACs are AWESOME! No other computer comes close.

I’ve even owned a Sony Vaio, Don’t get me wrong, it was a nice laptop, but it had nothing on my MacBook.

p.s. I have the iPod touch, it’s really nice, but I would rather something smaller.

Anyone have the new iPod nano, who would be willing to trade with me?

I need something a little smaller for running.

The iPod touch is nice and thin, but it’s too big, and it does not come close to the thinness and the lightness of an iPod nano.

Easy for a, “man,” to say, “pro choice,” when it is impossible for you to ever make such a decision. Stick to things you can control, like being a vegetarian.

Believe what you will, but STOP imposing those beliefs on the members of YWN. You don’t seem to like when people do it to you, so why are you doing it back?

    p.s.

I ENJOY & LOVE EATING MEAT! 😉 yummmmmmmm

Let me tell you a little something about clothing size.

It has a lot to do with your height and build (also hips).

I know a girl who is 5’8, she is gorgeous in excellent shape, and slim. She is a size 10.

To those of you bashing size 0, maybe you’re tall &/or broadly build, so you have no clue as to what you are talking about. It’s insulting to say that they have an “eating disorder” or are “obsessed with dieting.” I’m a very healthy individual. I consume over 2000 (healthy) calories a day, exercise regularly, get yearly physicals, dental cleanings twice a year, etc.

Sizes 0, 6, 10, or 16, are just numbers. Stop using them as your guidelines for who is skinny, fat, healthy, or unhealthy. Observing an individual from the outside does not say everything about their personal health.

    Just one more quick note.

    Beauty is RELATIVE!

Someone you find repulsive, may look pretty to others.

Someone you find beautiful, may look ugly to others.

You can’t fault a person for wanting to be attracted to their significant other.

To quote, Mr/Ma’am, Give Me a Break, “If you’re pro-life, shouldn’t you be pro- the life of innocent animals?”

To answer your question, nope I am NOT pro life for animals.

    Let me ask you this:

If you had to make a “choice,” to save the life of a kitty or the life of a baby, who would you save? There is BIG difference between the two. You can’t compare the life of a person to the life of an animal.

Me believing in pro life (humans), has no comparison to “pro life,” of animals.

You claim to not support ALL of what PETA is, but you question my beliefs on not supporting ALL pro life subjects, i.e. animals. A little contradicting, don’t you think?

p.s. A fetus has their first heartbeat at 5 weeks, (this is usually around the time a women finds out she is even pregnant).

Now I’m off to enjoy my juicy steak dinner…YUMMY!

If anyone needs an outline on what is considered overweight, underweight, and healthy weight, check out the BMI calculator on the CDC website here:

    http://www.cdc.gov/nccdphp/dnpa/healthyweight/assessing/bmi/adult_bmi/english_bmi_calculator/bmi_calculator.htm

p.s. This is just a general guideline, and may not be applicable to some people, i.e. athletes.

The, “it’s my body, my choice,” bit is sick. The fetus didn’t create itself. Take responsibility for your actions!

    But, I’m definitely a pro meat eater 🙂 mmm…

Joseph – I’m not trying to challenge you in any way, but confused, and wondering if you have an explanation.

The Talmud states, that embarrassing an individual in public is equivalent to murdering them (I’m unsure what the exact hebrew text is).

How are you allowed to embarrass this person even when they disregard your attempts of giving Tochanah?

If a person believes that another individual deserves death for their wrong doings, and decides to embarrass them in the replacement of death, doesn’t a B’D have to decide such a decree?

Please clarify this for me, thanks!

Just in case anyone missed my post earlier in this thread, I just wanted remind you that my brother had a horrible seizure (while driving a car with his wife and 9 children). He drank around 12 cups of coffee a day. The doctors told him the coffee was one of the factors that gave him the seizure. It caused him to get dangerously high blood pressure. He started out with just 1 cup, which led to 2 cups, then 3 cups, until he reached the 12+ cup mark. His doctor forbade him from drinking even one little cup of coffee ever again. You never know how many cups of coffee can be toxic for you body. Some people’s bodies are more sensitive than others. If you’re going to consume large amounts of coffee, I would suggest buying a home blood pressure monitor (you can get them for cheap or even free now days), and see a doctor more regularly. Also, keep your eyes open to any new symptoms you may be experiencing, the earlier you catch things, the better your chances are for recovery.

I say a “Shabbat Shalom,” to everyone I pass by on Shabbat, whether they are a 5 year old, a young man, an old folk, etc. It doesn’t make a difference to me, I just think it’s a nice thing to do. If I don’t get a response, oh well, so be it, moving right along, nothing to see here.

I can understand it to be an “uncomfortable,” situation, when a woman offers a hand shake to a man (&/or the other way around). I’ve seen this happen many times, and it’s extremely awkward on both sides. Some people happen to be more sensitive than others.

I’m not going to side with either party. I don’t know who this person is, where they came from, if they even heard me, or if they weren’t Jewish and I just confused the heck out of them hehehe. If you think of it like that, you will find yourself feeling a little less embarrassed or upset about the situation.

On the topic of weight and health. You can’t possibly guess someone’s weight and health based on their clothing size. BMI charts are a general guideline, and does not take into consideration the natural build of a person or their lean muscle mass. I used to be so concerned about the “scale.” Now, it doesn’t mean a thing to me. If you’re eating a well balanced diet, exercising regularly, getting yearly physicals, etc. rip the tag out of that dress, hide your scale in the closet, and be happy! It’s easier to type this then to act on it, but over time as one’s self esteem becomes stronger, so will their self image, and everything else positive that comes along with it.

Question, which type of apples would you suggest with this recipe, and should they be hard or softer (sorry for my ignorance, but I have never made a cake like this before)? I wanted to send my father something for the holidays, and his favorite cake happens to be the apple cake, and this one sounds delicious. I’ll let you know how it turns out.

The truth is, most of what you will find out about a girl or guy, is what is discussed on the dates. If you’re nervous about a certain dress code, see for your self how she/he dresses on the date. If you’re curious about her past, then start up a conversation about schools and camps the both of you attended. A lot can be determined by the first or second date, depending on how aggressive or outgoing you both are. The shidduch scene is a tough one, and I feel for those who have to endure it, especially when it takes a long while to find your besherit, and having to turn someone down, or be rejected yourself, but don’t despair, there is someone out there for you. I can’t sympathize completely with you, or others who have to deal with all this (Hubby was my first date), but I have people who I am very close to going through it. Some have been out with over 100 men (not exaggerating), but they DID find their besherit, they have children together and are very happy.

You also have to realize that many lies get spread around about people because of what someone supposedly “heard.” Also, there may be things you don’t find out till you are engaged or married. There is no 100% fool proof way of knowing someone completely before you marry, or knowing if the marriage is going to last. You just have to have faith in Hashem, and that He is guiding you in the right direction.

I’m not sure if anyone has addressed this yet, so please forgive me if this is a repeat. This is a question for the original poster, (and others who wish to sound their opinion). I’m curious what your views are on the scientific studies and experiments on animals for reasons such as finding cures for many diseases that have sadly inflicted many people, their loved one’s, and friends. I support those who will not eat meat, or wear animal material, (I myself eat meat, and enjoy it tremendously). I, however, do not support those who protest against scientific experiments on animals for the purpose of finding treatments, and cures for diseases. You should also think about that before taking any over the counter, or prescription drugs, for many are there for you and the public, because of the studies they performed on animals. (There are several other products out there that have been tested on animals, some will say whether it was or not, but not all).

mariner, I’m only replying to you, because you are the last to post, and it caught my attention. Some animals are a gilgul, and I for one believe in that concept (from a very personal and emotional experience).

This is a great point to bring up, because many people don’t think you can “over” drink fluids. A fast is going to be hard, whether you drink a lot or not, but to make it a bit more bearable, make sure the day Before Yom Kippur, you eat sufficient amounts of nutrients that your body needs. Also, take in extra electrolytes (sodium or potassium)(many sport drink companies started selling sugar free sport drinks, although sport drinks don’t contain as much electrolytes as one thinks), B-vitamins , and healthy Carbs (brown rice, whole grains).

Everyone is different. Some wait till after 12-13 weeks because at that point the chances of miscarriage goes down significantly.

Some will wait till 26-28 weeks when a premature baby has a greater chance of survival out of the womb. Some wait till they are 37 weeks which is full term, and some never tell unless a family or friend asks. Or you have people like me, who tell the second they find out! lol. I took an EARLY test, and we were too excited to keep it in! We only told family and close friends though, and by 6-7 months there was no hiding it!

Hey picked this up form wiki for you, a little info on Vitamin D deficiency:

    Deficiency

Vitamin D deficiency can result from: inadequate intake coupled with inadequate sunlight exposure, disorders that limit its absorption, conditions that impair conversion of vitamin D into active metabolites, such as liver or kidney disorders, or, rarely, by a number of hereditary disorders. Deficiency results in impaired bone mineralization, and leads to bone softening diseases, rickets in children and osteomalacia in adults, and contributes to osteoporosis.

    Diseases caused by deficiency

    .

Vitamin D deficiency is known to cause several bone diseases including:

Rickets, a childhood disease characterized by impeded growth, and deformity, of the long bones. The earliest sign of subclinical vitamin D deficiency is Craniotabes, abnormal softening or thinning of the skull.

Osteomalacia, a bone-thinning disorder that occurs exclusively in adults and is characterized by proximal muscle weakness and bone fragility.

Osteoporosis, a condition characterized by reduced bone mineral density and increased bone fragility.

I don’t mean to go off topic, but people mentioned what amounts and how many times to eat that is considered “healthy”

Just know that breakfast SHOULD be your biggest meal of the day, and dinner should NOT be the biggest meal. Breakfast with a good combination of protein and fiber is the healthiest way to go, your breakfast is what jump starts your day. Studies have shown that most people who eat a good breakfast have less weight problems then people who skip breakfast. A lot of that has to do with the fact that if you starve yourself during the day, you will binge all night, and consume exuberant amount of calories. There is no reason to have a huge dinner (unless you have a race or something very physical the next day -there’s more to that, but doesn’t apply to this thread), you don’t need that many calories at night when you are sleeping. Just make sure you don’t let yourself go hungry (not boredom hunger, the REAL kind), when you deprive yourself of nutrients, your blood sugar can drop, and make you feel sluggish, tired, and sick.

p.s. I am not a member of a gym, but I still workout, you don’t need all that “special” equipment to keep in shape. just some good cross training/running shoes, and your own body weight to do exercises – (running, speed walking, several types of crunches, push ups, chin ups, pilates, etc.)

Wow! it’s great to see so much feedback!

I run 10-15 miles a week, I’m trying to work myself up. It would be really cool to do a marathon, so far all I’ve done is a 5k. But there were over 1500 people and it was still an amazing experience.

I’d also suggest runnersworld.com – it has tons of useful tips, and info, and they have a schedule for when different races are in your area, (that’s how I found out about the 5k)

And p.s. runner’s high DOES exist! After I do just a 2 or 3 mile run I have so much energy, feel so positive, and happy.

muchcommonsense, This is straight from the New York DMV website:

“a horn is used as a warning to others. It should not be used unnecessarily or to express your anger at other drivers or pedestrians.”

“Road rage can include: Verbal provocations, such as yelling, cursing, excessive horn honking, rude or obscene gestures and threats.”

You can print this out in big colorful letters (the rules stated above) and place them on all the cars causing all that ruckus, or hand it to the drivers (if possible) or paste them up all over town. Or your best bet would be to take down these people’s license plate numbers and file complaints, because they wont stop on request by a civilian.

Sometimes when a girl is overweight, there are people who view them as someone who doesn’t take care of themselves, so how are they going to take care of a family? Now days skinny is supposably “in” and attractive, when some years back, having a little meat on a girl was the attractive “in” look. Some guys will define a girl who is a size 5 to be “too fat” while others see a girl at a size 10 and think she is at a perfect weight. Beauty is all relative.

We do have to define the difference between a girl who is a little “heavy” and very overweight to obese. It is not about hurting her feelings, it’s about being healthy and living to see her grandchildren. Diet is NOT always the answer. Learning how to eat healthy and properly and exercise, is the right choice. Nowadays there are “diets” that cater to that way of thinking. Plus, many people are not attractive to someone who doesn’t eat, or does extreme diets. They want to go to a restaurant and know the other party is enjoying themselves and not looking at the food as if it were the enemy.

I would have to say that guys are NOT attractive to anorexic looking girls either. A slim, toned, healthy looking girl is attractive to most people. Another thing to keep in mind, is the girl’s self esteem. A girl (or guy for that matter) who put themselves down all the time or can’t take a compliment, are not too fun to be around. I knew a beautiful girl going on a date, and the whole time the guy could not stop talking about how fat and ugly he was. She told me that she liked him and was attracted to him until he started acting in such a negative way.

We have to make sure that our daughters and sons are strong individuals, who have healthy self esteems. Usually if someone is leading a healthy lifestyle, they have a higher sense of self worth then those who are overweight or underweight.

outoftowner, I feel bad that people treated that girl in such a way. No one should have to settle on ANYONE when it comes to marriage. This is the person they are going to be with till they are 120. It’s a serious decision, we are not talking about what color shirt to buy, this is their lives.

I personally have used that method in the past, and it was the only thing that worked, because every time you get just a taste of it, you’ll want more and more. (Not just coffee, but anything you’re addicted to) Obviously everyone is different, and some may need the tapering.

If you don’t want to depend on loads of caffeine to keep you up and alert, exercise, and proper diet is also another really good (and natural) remedy for lethargy. Also, make sure you are getting your proper vitamins, especially, your B vitamins, and iron.

I used to have very bad anemia, then I started taking a once a day multi vitamin (which contained 100% daily needed iron). That helped a bit, but I was still somewhat weak and sluggish all the time.

I started running 5+ days a week (plus strength training exercises as well), and eating healthier, and now I have more energy then I’ve had in years.

Just a little health note: stay away from too much heavy carbs that contain white flour (better to stick to whole grains, but not over doing it) and make sure you’re getting your full protein for the day (about 0.4-1.0 grams per pound you weigh, depending on how active you are). Keep your blood sugar balanced, by NOT skipping meals. ALSO, make sure you are getting enough fluids (and anything with caffeine or sugar do not count). WATER is the best!

Most of us are working to pay the bills, and college, and to financially survive, so taking time off on chol hamoed isn’t an option for some people. Especially with all the days people have to take off for the holidays, which comes out to a lot. Working close to shabbos, isn’t working on shabbos, so i don’t think it’s a problem. Think of it this way, the hours you work leading to shabbos (& perhaps chol hamoed), is what’s helping put the shabbos food on the table, and paying the rent or mortgage to have a home to enjoy your shabbos in. If your boss doesn’t have a problem with you leaving work early, then I don’t see why not?

From what I’ve seen, some people who drink 3 cups start drinking 4, then 5, then 6, and way up there. Just be careful, and don’t overdo it. My brother had a seizure, partially because he drank over 12 cups of coffee a day, (& yes it was related to the coffee, which gave him high blood pressure).

To be totally honest with you, I sometimes have a cup of coffee in the morning, but it just makes me hyper, and wiry, (and I’m already a very fidgety person)

p.s. I liked the “(I realize this is the Coffee Room, No offence! )” bit. I’m a sucker for corny jokes! (i’m being serious here, not sarcastic)

Truthfully, “brand names” mean nothing to me. I have a pair of nikes, only because I got a great deal on them (under $30 at famous footwear), they are very light weight which is essential for running, and they fit like a charm, (i have teeny feet, it’s so hard to find shoes that actually fit!)

I have some clothing NOT name brand that are in excellent condition, and they are a decade old, and I still wear them today.

You don’t have to go shopping every season, to look “good” and “put together.” (it has not been a decade since I shopped for clothing by the way)

If you really want to dress with what’s “in style,” and name brands, you can always go to, burlington, marshalls, tj maxx, or ross, and pay so much less then actual retail price. There are ways to wear brand name clothing, without spending a fortune. You just have to be thrifty, and find good deals. They are out there.

Oh and I forgot to mention in my previous post about Celebrex. It’s NOT a controlled substance (so your Dr. can call it in to the pharmacy, and you can get refills), but there is no generic for it, so it can be a bit pricy. Take just once a day, as needed. It’s in the same family as advil, so the side effects are kind of similar, but this drug is much more powerful then an advil. It’s a pretty good alternative for people who can’t handle codeine or other harder pain killers.

You can also do strength training exercises, but take it easy, don’t strain yourself. It just builds some muscle, and strength, and that can ease the pain as well.

I’m sorry you have to go through this, especially at such a young age. Hope this info helps a bit.

intellegent – Your primary physician can perform the lyme disease tests. I had to get tested because I had chronic pain throughout my entire body.

If in fact you do have arthritis, there is a medication they give out for arthritis pain (or some cases for people who suffer from severe pms) called Celebrex, which in my case worked wonders for me. Also, certain exercises can help with the arthritis.

I love eating meat, chicken, turkey, (but not lamb, for some reason it’s just too sad Baaaa)(& not veal, the torture they put that BABY animal through is too horrendous).

If someone wants to be a vegetarian, I respect their decisions, (who am I to tell someone what to eat or what they MUST like to eat).

If I lived on a farm I too would not eat animals, (because, how can you eat something you know you’re going to name, and be friends with?). I grew up with many pets, and I loved some of them dearly.

As for PETA, They can do what they want like any other activists groups, but I DO NOT support the EXTREMISTS (that goes for everything, from religion to politics). I’m of course talking about the one’s who scream & throw things at people wearing fur or eating meat.

mariner – following you post, I was thinking maybe we should make a; PC vs MAC thread. That would be tons of fun 😉 I like to hear different views from both sides of the spectrum.

p.s. I love MACs, I was lucky enough to get one at a bargain price (cheaper then an entry model dell). So far, no crashes, no viruses, and it’s so easy to use, it’s as if the makers of the MAC were thinking of the regular population not just the corporate types, when they designed it.

The past is the past, we can’t change it, but we can try to fix the negative aspects of it as much as we can. If one ignores the wrongs they have done in the past, it may come to bite them in the tush in the future.

I’ll do some research, and try to help you out to the best of my abilities. Do you remember where this incident occurred in Lakewood? Do you know the color of the car?

Thanks for this info! I was only buying from R&S (& Shloimy’s) for the past few years. I think I’m going to try for a homemade version.

abcd1234 – Nothing I own (I am aware of) is made from Germany, most of it is from Japan, China, U.S.A, and other places I just can’t recall at this time, but if I ever did have the money to buy a mercedes, I think I’d pass.

SJSinNYC – Did your parents have that information for you about your relatives dating back to 1492, or were you able to find out online? I ask because, I can only trace back to my great grandparents at most, and it would be pretty cool to know my ancestry way back in history. I also didn’t know that about the American Red Cross, now I feel bad, because I’m certified in first aid (& others), there. I think when I renew, I’ll go with the American Heart Association.

As other’s may have mentioned above (sorry, I only read the question in this post), Vista has a lot of issues, and that’s why some people have switched back to XP, they happen to like that version of windows better. There should be a customer service number you can call to give you some good assistance in this matter. Or you can always just get a MAC 😉

in reply to: Should Yeshiva Bochrim Dress in “Style” ? #622193

When it comes to the yeshiva buchorim’s style, they don’t necessarily have to wear the perry ellis suits, or barcelino hats, (I am most likely behind the times, and those brands are probably “obsolete” nowadays) but they should dress nicely (not pricy), because appearances & first impressions mean a lot for shidduchim, how they represent their schools, and how they appear to the non jewish onlookers. Dressing shlumpy, and raggedy, gives off a bad impression in different ways I had previously mentioned (& more). Looking put together, pressed, and fresh gives off a positive aura all around you.

-This is obviously just my personal opinion, not facts whatsoever. So please don’t take it to heart or be offended by it.
