“The city can’t magically take your yeshiva, turn it into a public school, and still allow religious studies to be taught”
I was addressing the space, nothing more. They would invoke eminent domain and buy the property at what they felt was market price.
apushatayidParticipantI’m worried about pebbles and other stuff that may have gotten into the bag. Is there an issue of flour or eggs shenisalem min hayain?
apushatayidParticipantIf all the yeshiva students suddenly showed up, the citu would take over the private school buildings, space won’t be an issue. On a more practical note, all religious groups and factions would have to work together. I think snowballs “down under” are a greater likelihood.
apushatayidParticipantA good private detective should take no more than 72 hours to vette a prospective boy/girl.
apushatayidParticipant“craziest combination of names given to one person i know someone i promise this is true his name is, here it goes! Peleh Yoeitz Ai-l Gibor Avi Ad Sar Sholom this is a posuk in the navi (i think yeshaya)”
The xtians already co-opted this name for their savior. they call him all these adjectives in their scripture, sometimes individually and sometimes collectively. “Isiah 9-5/6” (9:6/7 depending on the version of the bible they are using) is one of the most common phrases you will hear from a missionary. The passuk is a reference to Chizkiya.
apushatayidParticipantstart. control panel. keyboard. check the settings.
apushatayidParticipantCops and EMS personnel get paid too, perhaps they should stay away from accident scenes as well.
February 14, 2011 4:29 pm at 4:29 pm in reply to: What's the deal with dating with diabetes. #1088281apushatayidParticipantIf you are considering a shidduch with someone living with diabetes and want to learn more about diabetes, an excellent resource is Rabbi Meisels of “Friends With Diabetes” (google it).
Once you clear up all your ignorance surrounding diabetes, you can make intelligent inquiries.
apushatayidParticipantI plan on giving 2 manos to a friend.
apushatayidParticipantThe lawsuit you reference is not about making people work on a religious holiday, it is a general “hostile environment” lawsuit of which working on saturday is but a component.
Where did you read that lawyers comment? Not that I don’t believe it, Louis Vuitton company also said some outrageous things about African Americans (google it).
apushatayidParticipantYour right. I meant Paul Simon. Should have stuck with “Simon and Garfunkle” 🙂
apushatayidParticipantI dont know if Suki and Ding would ever put them on an All star collection, but by the definition of “All Star” posited here, no top 10 jewish All Star music cast would be complete without the likes of
George Gershwin,Leonard Bernstein, Art Garfunkle,Irving Berlin,
Neil Diamond, Pauk Sedaka, Neil Simon, and yes, Mod 80 Bob Dylan.
From Dylans time, perhaps 80 remembers David Lee Roth lead singer for Van Halen. The Beastie Boys, and Steely Dan all Jewish.
apushatayidParticipantI dont know if this is the technical name, but when we installed window guards, we were concerned about the same thing. We bought, what the installer called a “fire department approved” window guard. they are made for buildings with a fire escape and they easily open from inside to allow someone to get out in case c”v there is a reason to get out.
I dont know if you live in NYC, but if you do this may be helpful.
http://www.nyc.gov/html/fdny/pdf/fire_prevention/fire_escape_window_gates.pdf
If outside NYC, at least this will help you if you want to change what you have.
apushatayidParticipantShlishi. Yes. It exacerbates the shalom bayis problem. But it is not THE cause of the problem. Fixing all tznius issues will not repair the shalom bayis. The problem needs to be addressed, not exacerbating external factors.
apushatayidParticipantI did not read this thread from the top, nor did I read all posts. In scanning random posts there seems to be a focus on tsnius (or lack of it) and its impact on shalom bayis.
Someones elses spouse, or even single members of the opposite gender are likely not THE cause of issues, but may be the outlet used. Aino domeh mi shyesh lo pas bisalo, limi shain lo. Perhaps counseling in this area is something couples should look into, so that their spouse doesn’t look to fill his or her sal with forbidden fruit.
apushatayidParticipantNot sure how far back Mod 80 goes. But I enjoyed Kansas and Chicago (still do). As for All Stars, in no particular order my preferences run from Reb Shlomo, Diaspora Yeshiva Band and anything Arthur Fielder and the Boston Pops plays. Sometimes Andre Rieau (sp).
February 10, 2011 1:55 pm at 1:55 pm in reply to: Who Will YOU Be Collecting For This Purim? #739052apushatayidParticipantSeems to me that the mitzvah of matanos lievyonim has been corrupted. Seems that the ikkar to some has become the collecting and not the giving. Better question to ask is, how will you be mikayem the mitzvah of matanos lievyonim on purim?
apushatayidParticipant@ Daas. Why not? why do you need hersheys twillzers any more than someone else needs a subway grilled chicken sub? why do you have no hashkafic issue with sticking a chassidishe hashgacha onto a package of hersheys candy and not a subway restaurant? certainly it is more cost effective to utilize a process that also conforms to a standard of hechsher that you want and is why the heimishe companies dont start their own plant to make twizzlers. the same logic is applied to a franchise (bulk buying, marketing funds made available, low cost startup loans etc). the food is unquestionably kosher (in our discussion) at the subway restaurant. what is the hashkafic issue? please elaborate? when you do, please explain why twizzlers candy, mike and ikes candies, malt o meal cereals, and the myriad other “sticker” products are different.
apushatayidParticipant“i figured all men know how to park)”
Failed 2 road tests because I couldnt park 🙂 I’m glad I have a driveway now. I try and do as much shopping as possible in a mall where there is no parallel parking. Parking still gives me fits.
apushatayidParticipantIn the spirit of spending less, don’t buy hard liquor or wine to give to the bachurim either.
apushatayidParticipantDaas. Why not? I don’t have an opinion either way since I have no hashkafic issue with a Subway that has a hechsher. Does it bother you whenn going up the aisles of a heimishe grocery that you see “stickers” on malt o meal cereals, hersheys twizzlers, mike and ikes candies and dozens of other products?
apushatayidParticipant“When someone has a group of boys visit on purim in costumes who arrived by limo he knows that he is expected to give a little more to offset the expenses.”
Interesting perspective, but one I dont share. When my bell rings on Purim, or any time for that matter, I dont look ino the mode of transporation, rather I look at the tzedaka being solicited for. I wouldnt give more, or less, if someone showed up in a limo or on roller skates.
apushatayidParticipantThe name “Subway” is associated with a restaurant chain that sells non kosher Sub sandwiches. This leads to a hashkafic issue among some, when this chain opens a store where the food is under a reliable hechsher. Those who do have this hashkafic issue, do they also have a problem with non kosher clothing made kosher (slits etc. properly repaired)? Do they have an issue with a clothing store known to push the envelope of pritzus that opens a store on 13th Ave in Boro Park that sells “kosher” clothing? (These are 2 different questions).
apushatayidParticipantWhy do you assume the teacher sent the HW as a must do? Perhaps teacher sent it as a way to keep you informed what was covered. Would you prefer the teacher sent her notes instead? Dont take it so personally.
apushatayidParticipantSo, I better log off and go learn.
apushatayidParticipantSet it up. offer the help.
apushatayidParticipantPBA. Your brother should have told him the milk is chassidishe shechita only.
apushatayidParticipantThe point?
apushatayidParticipantFinding a hetter does not necessarily mean digging up a kula.
apushatayidParticipant1: Name the Rav. I can name many “rabbonim”, and even claim to have spoken to them and make claims in their name.
2: R’ Menashe Klein when he issued his psak for eruv in brooklyn, said it is kosher eruv and 100% muttar to carry within it, not “kosher bidieved”. In his opinion, it is a perfectly valid eruv. You are free to disagree.
I am not taking sides on the psak, just taking issue with the free use of the term “kula” and its careless (or subtle) use casting aspersions on poskim.
February 8, 2011 3:13 pm at 3:13 pm in reply to: PLEASE HELP – Need ideas for a gift for my wife #738310apushatayidParticipantGive her time to do whatever it is she wants. Tell her the next 2 sundays from 2-6 you are responsible for the kids and she is free to do whatever she wants. sleep, read, get a manicure, shop, visit friends. For a bonus, take care of supper and bedtime too.
apushatayidParticipantIn my day, bachurim spent purim with their families or in yeshiva with their rabbeim and chaverim.
apushatayidParticipant“And i’m like…my hard earned dough aint going to support that dude and his ride.”
Sounds like a story they say about the Netziv. (someone also told me the emek davar says this pshat on the passuk in teruma as well, but I have not seen it – didnt look for it) One year he showed up at a gvir in a fine carriage and top of the line limo horse. the gvir didnt give as much as previous years, and when prompted told the netziv that he doesnt want his money to support the hay for the horse or the upkeep of the fancy carriage (a simply horse and carriage would do). The netziv replied with pshat in the passuk from parshas teruma about “yidvenu libo”. Part of the chachma given to betzalel was the ability to discern the thoughts of the person who gave. Those who gave more willingly, their money was used towards the more kodesh keilim and those whose intentions were less “pure”, their money went to feed the horse (or its equivilant in the mishkan).
apushatayidParticipantThe use of the term “kula” for a psak you don’t agree with is a slap in the face of the Rav who issued the psak. Does R’ Menashe Klein think he is “maikel” in hilchos eruvin or does he believe the eruv is 100% kosher? Want to disagree, fine. Don’t label others “maikilim”.some took me to task for the tone I used. Is a subtle dig any better?
apushatayidParticipantYou may feel it is a kula. Those who issued the psak believe it is halacha. Don’t follow the psak, but don’t belittle the psak by labeling it a kula, which is a not so subtle dig with all its negative connotations.
apushatayidParticipantUrban legend has it that R’Yackov Kaminetzky Z’l once directed someone to R’Moshe Z’l to get a psak on a certain matter. The person alledgedly said that he doesn’t want any kulos, whereby R’ Yackov Z’l is reported to have answered if R’ Moshe says it is muttar it is not a kula, that is the halacha.
To say that “eruvin in general” rely on kulos is either ignorant or stupid. The rabbanim who permit its use may disagree with you, but are not lining up kulos to permit its use. Please see how some of the rishnim and achronim explain the concept “koach dihetera adif”.
apushatayidParticipantOne persons cleaning help is anothers pesach getway. Everyone should mind their own business when it comes to other peoples money.
apushatayidParticipantDaas. I’m not his Rav.
apushatayidParticipant“In reality the idea came from Subway itself, because they want to get a piece of the kosher market”
If I’m not mistaken, one of the largest Subway Franchisees is a yid named Feldman. His Subway Development Corporation headquartered in the DC area owns over 1000 Subways. I have heard that Mr. Feldman is a frum jew who keeps kosher (but I have no way to confirm that, have never tried, and it may be nothing more than a popular urban legend).
apushatayidParticipant“actually beer the summer “
I hope this is a typo 🙂
apushatayidParticipant“Remember the Yetzer Ha’Ra loves to work overtime”
Yes, and in this case it is the lashon hara about people who live a certain lifestyle.
apushatayidParticipant“there is nothing inevitably wrong with”
Do you really mean to use the word “inherently”?
Someone tried to open a restaurant using an established brand name. Is it any different than opening a Benneton franchise to sell clothes? Amway? Shaklee?
apushatayidParticipantA girl my wife set up broke up with a guy because his long term plan (yes, he said this on the 3rd date) was to make sure he gets approved for HUD, SNAP, HEAP and Medicaid. Anything not covered by that, his wifes income would cover (income was a loosely translated term for your parents, my parents or his wifes job).
apushatayidParticipantAm I?
apushatayidParticipantAs long as it isn’t serving wolf 🙂
apushatayidParticipantKosher Subway. I thought this was a thread about train cars with separate seating for men and women. Then I read the OP.
apushatayidParticipantHow did this get from Yeshiva Bachurim to a married man in Kollel?
February 3, 2011 7:40 pm at 7:40 pm in reply to: Everyone is "amazing"- how can you tell who really has great Midos? #736586apushatayidParticipant“Everyone is “amazing”- how can you tell who really has great Midos?”
Same way you determine someone is the best bachur in the yeshiva.
apushatayidParticipantMYTAKE: What does being in kollel have to do with food stamps?
KAVOD HATORAH: Most people in kollel need extra money
ME: SNAP -Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program – (official name food stamp program) is not a side job to bring in a few extra dollars. One qualifies for the benefits of this program, or does not, based on specific guidelines set by the government.
apushatayidParticipantKavod Hatorah? More like a bizayon.
