The obstacles to gun ownership are weak enough at the present time – and I am talking about New York. If Jews want to arm themselves, current – or even tighter – gun controls are not the problem. I don’t know whether it’s going to be a net benefit to synagogues to have more members packing, and frum shuls will need very secure lockers to hold pistols from Friday night to Saturday morning, unless there are rabbis who opine that carrying weapons on Shabbos is ok.

And, most important of all, will it help to have bullets flying in a synagogue? It’s hard to say.

I don’t know whether a war with Iran is a good idea, but plenty of generals and diplomats have warned against it, both before and after the killing of Gen. Sulimani. Of course, we know the president is impulsive, does not read his daily intelligence briefings, and can’t find Iran on a map. So what could go wrong?

blue shirt got it right. I would like to add that the opening poster’s story illustrates the thin line between yiddishkeit piety and obsessive-compulsive disorder. If we forget why Hashem wants us to do something, or that why we do something is because Hashem commanded it, we are just a bunch of screwballs.

The OP sounds young. Life with only one kidney is dangerous, as you may lose the one kidney in an accident or illness. Save your kidneys for yourself and your family. And your kidneys are likely to match the blood and tissue types of a family member in need.

I know a father who gave a kidney to his son. If dad had given it to strangers or an “organ bank” at a young age, his son might have had to wait for a suitable donor, or never have received the needed kidney.

Donating organs is not like donating blood. Blood grows back, organs don’t.

Oh, one other thing: I believe “OOT” means “out of town,” which I interpret to mean outside the New York City metro area. I believe the charter school will draw its students from the 5 boroughs. Evidently, the headline author thinks OOT refers to areas outside Flatbush and Midwood. That would make Borough Park OOT. Seems to be an awfully narrow definition of OOT.

I know lots of members of “Conservative” synagogues. They are hardly a bunch of lefties. I don’t know why they chose to rent their unused space to a charter school dedicated to “at risk youth,” but I bet they are no different than most landlords, and so I suspect it was money and credit risk, neither of which are strong suits for yeshivas.

I have always considered any walkout of daveners right before or during the rabbi’s speech/sermon/devar Torah to be an insult to the rabbi. And so (regrettably in my opinion), as long as there are rabbis, there will be kiddush clubs.

To Gadolhat: You comment that Kudlow is a talented professional, but you don’t say what profession. He does not have masters or doctorate in economics, and, if I am not mistaken, his undergraduate major was not econimics. I don’t think any credentialed economist takes him seriously. I guess his profession is smoothe talker about economics. He has consistently made the “best dressed” lists in Washington. He has long supported the idea that tax cuts pay for themselves, notwithstanding all the evidence to the contrary. Professionals do not ignore evidence, and, for what it’s worth, most professionals are average dressers.

Sekulow is a lawyer, and lawyers are supposed to advocate their clients’ positions, regardless of merit. He may be good at that, but that does not make him a good advisor.

It is interesting that someone is looking for an English-language edition of a Jewish newspaper. I think it shows the ascendancy of English as an everyday language of Jews. The attachment of some Jews to Yiddish is, I think, nostalgic and unsound. Yiddish is not a holy language. It was appropriate when Jews lived in central and eastern Europe, and there are many important writings in Yiddish, but those writings are not the Torah or Talmud. I think English is spoken by more Jews than any other language, and we should recognize that fact.

To lakewhut: Yes, Trump has a Wharton degree, but he clearly does not have a Wharton education. No one at Wharton thinks “trade wars are easy to win,” or that “tax cuts pay for themselves”. There are lots of things money can buy, including Ivy League degrees, but only genuine, honest work can get you an education, Ivy League or otherwise. My undergraduate education is from the University of Wisconsin – not Ivy, but not too shabby.

As for fake news, the fakest news these days is anything that Trump says about nearly anything. Unfortunately, you and I cannot have a sensible discussion since we do not agree on the facts.

The high number of comments on this topic tells me that the posters who oppose the temporary suspension of the statute of limitations on six crimes against children have little faith in the yeshivas to screen out the problem- atic teachers/rabbis. I have no idea of the scope of the problem of child abuse in yeshivas, but I think it is good that the secular authorities have increased the recourse of victims to seek civil relief.

I also have no idea how many unscrupulous Jews would bring fake lawsuits – i.e., real lawsuits with fake facts – to pick up some extra bucks at the expense of the yeshivas and the teachers/rabbis who work in them. Clearly, though, many of the posters think that number is high.

I have noticed – on YWN and elsewhere – that many Associated Press stories lean anti-Trump, and others, sometimes covering the same event, lean pro-Trump. AP sells its content to a broad range of markets, and I guess it is helpful to AP to have products that appeal to all its customers, some who lean left, others who lean right.

As for YWN, I have no doubt the editor(s) lean pro-Trump, but not brazenly so. I have not doubt, also, that Trump is not good for the Jews. When the white nationalists he encourages run out of immigrants and brown folks to bash, they will turn to their favorite and long-standing target, the Jews. An American embassy in Jerusalem won’t help Jews in Boro Park.

The thing that ate the chedarim that were best at teaching math was a giant godzilla-like fire-breathing dragon. It didn’t actually happen – it is based on a movie with a cult following, called “The Thing That Ate Chedarim in Jerusalem.” The movie is on a lot of lists of the worst movies of 1954. One of the supporting actors was Bernard Schwartz, who later changed his name to Tony Curtis. How bad was the movie? Jerry Lewis turned down a chance to play the lead because he thought it was stupid.

The Lubavitcher Rebbe teaches that a Jew is someone with a Jewish soul that Hashem breathes into him/her every day. (This view is not unique to the Lubavitcher Rebbe.) A non-observant Jew, even an anti-semitic Jew, is nevertheless a Jew. A Jewish woman married to a goy gives birth to Jews. Some of the attitudes of antagonism toward non-observant on display here are not promoting Yiddishkeit among the non-observant and are in fact destructive, not to mention breaches of many mitzvos. The Lubavitchers have a lot to teach us about strengthening Yiddishkeit and the practice of Torah Judaism.
