Well, only nOnesorah answered my question. Some others had worthwhile comments. The correct answer is as follows: No, a law (federal, state or local) requiring the posting of the Ten Commandments is not good for the Jews. Among other things, such a requirement violates the establishment clause of the US constitution. And it would set a precedent requiring the posting other laws , e.g., accepting a savior, accepting a single prophet, and lots of other things that violate, or are contrary to the teachings of, the Torah. So, no, a legal requirement to post the Ten Commandments would not be good for the Jews.

I believe the fundamental mission of Chabad shluchim is to have non-observant Jews do more mitzvos, whether it’s putting on tefillin or praying for Moshiach to come. In fact, whenever I see shluchim on patrol, they ask men about tefillin, women about lighting Shabbos candles. I don’t think they have ever mentioned Moshiach directly.

As for believing the 7th Lubavitcher Rebbe is Moshiach: Among the oldest Chabadniks, some do believe that, but among the younger, i.e., under 60, most accept that the Rebbe did die and therefore cannot be Moshiach. I think the younger Chabadniks are waiting for the Rebbe’s generation to go to the Next World before accepting an 8th rebbe. Caveat: these are my opinions based on conversations with many Chabadniks. None of the have said exactly what I just wrote.

I don’t know who is the current owner of Adidas, but one of its founders, in 1936, was a member of the Nazi Party. He made the track shoes. He also made the track shoes for Jesse Owen’s, who was referred to as “the Schwartz American” by the announcer at the 1936 Olympics, which Hitler wanted to showcase his theory of German racial superiority.

If you look at photographs of frum people that were taken 50 years ago, you will see that frum attire has evolved. Hats were smaller, shoes were wing-tipped, suits were differently tailored, and men were thinner. When deciding how to dress, go back to the mitzvahs and authoritative rabbis, not the brochures and yentas.

First of all, let me clarify my Brooks Brothers recommendation. It’s great if you have money to burn, but if you don’t, look for something more price-competitive.

Second, Joseph’s guidance is good, but it needs this caveat: The suit should fit, the shirt should be tucked in, and when it rains, do not put a plastic bag on your black hat to protect it. Black felt is naturally water-resistant and will be fine when the rain stops. You will not learn this by observing the bochurim going in and out of yeshivas.

Halachic question: How disheveled does a bochur have to be to be committing a sin against the Halachic dress code?

To ujm: I have always believed that the term “JAP,” when referring to a Jewish woman, is offensive for a number of reasons. First of all, it is also a word used during World War II to refer to one of America’s enemies, and it was generally meant to be offensive to all Japanese, including Japanese Americans put into American concentration camps.

More generally, it sterotypes Jewish women and adolescents as privileged and spoiled. Some of them are, many are not, but “JAP” smears them all. If you and/or your acquaintances use “JAP” as often as your post implies, you are doing a disservice to Jewish women.

I once heard a Reform rabbi speak extensively about the wrongness of the term “JAP”, so, evidently, the Reform Jews get it, even if holy Jews like you do not.

“JAP” is, among other things, loshon hara.
