and by the way, in way of apology for the highjack- which i did not begin-

i will put in my two cents on the original topic (however i eagerly await NeutiquamErro’s rejoiner on the matter at hand!)

as a camper i barely gave it any attention and from a staff point of view (which is what i remember better) while i never dreaded color war, i didnt enjoy it that much, but i know that there are people who love and live for it. im sure there are some places that do it the right way and let and make sure everyone is involved in a meaningful way that they also personally enjoy, thereby causing a fun atmosphere to permeate throughout camp. unfortunatly i was never in such a place so only a select few staff members got that…

    A mistake? not necessarily.

excelent! we have now acertained that we can have word in ‘american’ english that is not a mistake even though it differs from the ‘UK’ version! so now this was…?:)

there is no ‘American’ English and ‘UK’ English. There is just English. And mistakes.

and now for a bit of history(as requsted)…

    [28]

    there, wasnt that enlightening?

Word Origin and History for elevator:As a name for a mechanical lift attested from 1787

Word Origin and History for lift:Sense of “elevator” is from 1851

And one more thing. We created the language, so we use it as we wish.

you may have created the language, but we created color war πŸ™‚

To paraphrase a comment I once heard quoted, there is no ‘American’ English and ‘UK’ English. There is just English. And mistakes.

im going to go out on limb here and assume this person was British… but let me ask -along the same lines as my above statement (and the famous source for it)- would calling that box that brings people between floors in a building an “elevator” be considered in your book a “mistake”? πŸ™‚

    i apprieciate PPA’s

Back on page four iBump 2.0 asked:

at the end of book 1, Dumbledore said that his and Hermione’s owl crossed in mid-air, however a few pages later Hermione says to Harry that that she ran into Dumbledore on the way to the Owlery to send him the owl

The answer is that Dumbledore had indeed returned before Hermione could send an owl. Harry, when questioning Dumbledore, did not know this and assumed that Hermione had actually sent an owl. Dumbledore, therefore, thought that Hermione had sent an owl, and thus assumed that he must have crossed it in midair.

considering it was 6 months in the coming i think the 2 weeks for my response can be excused…

in any case, i strongly disagree with your assessment of the situation, that Dumbledore wouldnt have known that the owl never got off. the passage reads: “and we were dashing up to the owlery to contact Dumbledore when we met him in the entrance hall-he already knew- he just said, ‘Harry’s gone after him, hasnt he?’ and hurtled off to the third floor”

so, although the book clearly says that hermione never got a chance to say word(such as ” oh, Professor, we were just about to send an owl to yo-“), it does say that he met them as they were dashing up to the owlery (never mind the side point of how did they get down to the entrance hall on the way up to the owlery from the third floor? -and before anyone answers that they had fallen quite a distance through the trap door under fluffy and we are never told how they got out, so maybe the exit was closer to subterranean levels, i assure you, if there was a closer route to where harry was, Dumbledore wouldnt have hurtled to the third floor-) but, that aside, they were dashing up, surely he saw what direction they were coming from, at the very least, while talking to harry, and discussing hermione, he wouldve pictured his encounter with her in his minds eye and realized that she hadnt been tearing down a flight of stairs(having already sent the owl).

on a side note, i would like to join in condemning all those who mentioned that hpmore! it took me over a week to get through that one thousand nine hundred and thirty page thing! ( and once there i went on to read the james potter series as well, another couple of thousand pages and more coming!)

thanks showjoe, although, seeing as youre only here 1 year, unless you are a second screen name of someone or you were a watcher for a(long) while, i dont see how you remember me very well; either way, thanks for the welcome back.

One will notice that the Rav, Rabbi Knopfler, was very careful not to say that this is a sure sign of mashiach coming! all he did was ascertain and confirm that this red cow is completely red and halachicly fit for use as a parah aduma if the situation does arise. if anyone personally feels that this can be a message and wants to use this as a catalyst to begin and to further their growth in avodaas hashem (something that we should all be doing anyways!, but yes, there are catalysts that help us along in life) go for it! if you want to be a cynic, hey, its a free world and we all have bechira…

We are living in the chevlei mashiach, thats something that all the gedolai yisroel are saying, so yes, i personally belive that this can very well be the parah aduma that we will use, hopefully very soon.

The most likely answer is that they used trial and error,

on a blank piece of parchment?!?

and seeing as you are tytching up conceptual flaws regarding the map sir voddmort (im sorry…duke!), whats your take on this one:

We’re supposed to believe that during Ron’s first year that Fred and George NEVER checked up on or looked at Ron on the map to see that there was a “Peter Pettigrew” next to or near him? Ever? Recall, F&G “nicked” the map from Filch’s office in THEIR first year, so they’d had it already, and even if Molly didn’t know that they had it, she wouldn’t have said “Keep an eye on your baby brother this year, it’s his first year…”??? Or that they went through two (and a half, almost) years of Ron being there with “Scabbers” that they NEVER ONCE saw Ron next to a “Peter Pettigrew” and if they did, they never asked him who in the world Peter Pettigrew was? As rabble-rousing as the two boys were, we are supposed to believe that they never once checked up on their little brother before they gave the map to Harry?

“The book never mentions that Harry got his wand back”

right after Grawp chases away the centaurs, Ron, Ginny, Neville, and Luna find them in the forest and:

“so”, said Ron, pushing aside a low-hanging branch and holding out Harry’s wand,” had any ideas?”

“How did you get away?” asked Harry in amazement, taking his wand back from Ron.

“Couple of Stunners, a Disarming Charm, Neville brought off a really nice little Impedimenta Jinx”, said Ron airily, now handing back Hermione’s wand too. book 5, page 760

    very impressive!

though i completely disagree with your answer for the winking snake-i mean, really?!? yes, the ocular scale proper is a transparent scale covering the eye, but a transparent scale shedding would still be, wait for it….transparent!-,i am impressed with your breadth of knowledge of the series,(you got me on the snape one- i completely forgot about that exchange) and your opinion of the characters. while i would agree with your point of fudge being in denial, i would still argue that there were times throughout the seventh book that a little bit of luck would have gone a long way. furthermore, although yes, they are just slytherins, dumbledore has to at least put on a good showing of attempting to keep the students safe! when sirius black was “loose in the castle”, dumbledore didnt say: “Griffindor, Hufflepuff, and Ravenclaw- to the dining hall, Slytherin- you can go to your dormitories” right?

given your expertise, id like to see your take on the first conceptual question, how would you answer that?

    6) Felix Felicis(the good luck potion in the sixth book). When Ginny, Ron, and Hermione use it at the end of the 6th book they say that the death eater’s curses “barely missed them”. I know that Hermione says it takes 6 months to make the potion, but I presume for some price, a skilled witch or wizard could make tons of this stuff and Harry (or Dumbledore or Voldemort or Snape or Belltrix etc. etc.) could just buy some. This is especially apparent with the amount of money just sitting in Harry’s vault. Why didn’t he just buy a big bottle of the stuff once he found out about it?!

7)The entire Sirius storyline is dependent on him being the secret-keeper for james and Lilly, yet at shell cottage Bill is HIS OWN secret-keeper. Um, what? Why didn’t James just become his own secret keeper?

8)Voldemort was on the back of Quirrell’s head for the entire school term at Hogwarts. Snape frequently threatened Quirrell, thwarted his attempts to kill Harry at the Quidditch match, and basically made it pretty clear “where his loyalties lay”-with Dumbledore. So why didn’t Voldemort-on the back of Quirrell’s head-attempt to contact Snape, who he claimed was his most faithful servant before his fall and after his return to power? Didn’t Voldemort suspect that Snape was working for Dumbledore? And since they didn’t appear to have any contact, since Snape was not even pretending to want Quirrell to get the stone, which would have been his course of action if he were a spy for either side, (aside from the fact that I don’t think Snape suspected that Quirrell had Voldy on the BACK OF HIS HEAD, just that he was working for him) how did Voldemort not know that Snape wasn’t loyal? And in later books when he claims that Snape “never betrayed him and was always faithful”, isn’t that totally excluding the entire first book when Snape was blatantly sabotaging his plans?

    9) another on the wands (Elder in particular): Grindelwald stole it. he did not disarm or defeat anyone to acquire it. Therefore it never really BELONGED to him, therefore it could not belong to Dumbledore, or Draco, or Snape or Harry or Voldemort or ANYONE who defeated or disarmed its previous “owner”

    some conceptual ones:

1)We’re supposed to believe that during Ron’s first year that Fred and George NEVER checked up on or looked at Ron on the map to see that there was a “Peter Pettigrew” next to or near him?

2)I don’t understand why Sirius didn’t tell Harry to just use the mirror whenever he broke into Umbridge’s office the first time. He asks if everything is all right and Harry says he just wanted to talk about his dad. Seems like Sirius should have told him to get out and go back to the dorm and use the mirror, it’d be much safer and you can bet Sirius carried his half of the mirror at all times just in case Harry was in trouble. Even if Sirius wasn’t aware that Harry was breaking into her office to use the fire, he and Lupin both know that the fires are being watched so it still wouldn’t be worth the risk.

3)Why couldn’t Harry have “re-lived” the experience in the graveyard by means of the pensieve? The real “plot hole” part of this is that if Harry had just done this, they could have shown Fudge the scene and proved that it had happened. Clearly, Dumbledore already had the pensieve, because Harry had used it to accidentally witness the three Wizengamot’s trials while in Dumbledore’s office. Of course, one could argue that Fudge just wasn’t willing to believe Voldemort was back, and wouldn’t have watched it even if they had offered him the chance- but that still doesn’t explain why Dumbledore makes Harry relive the “horrors” of the graveyard scene by retelling them, when Dumbledore and Sirius could have just watched it instead

    4) everyone here is questioning the passage of power of wands, what about this: WHAT WAS DUMBLEDORE THINKING?!

We know that Dumbledore’s original plan was for the Elder Wand not passing down to Snape when the latter kills him, for the killing was agreed upon. All fine for that. But: as it can be lost when taken forcefully (it passes to Harry when he wrestles Draco out of HIS wand while at the manor), I am to conclude that, had Dumbledore’s plan gone as planned, the wand’s allegiance would have passed to Voldemort when he removes it from the tomb, just like the latter says at the end of the Battle of Hogwarts). Really Dumbledore did not expect Voldmeort to break into his tomb? I do not find it convincing that the wand’s power would die out after Dumbledore’s death.

    5) how does voldemort get his wand back? he used it to kill harry’s parents and tries to kill harry then I assume he takes a spirit form. Are we to infer that his wand just sits in Harry’s house until he has wormtail fetch 14 years later? No one searched the area for clues?

so,for the fun of it, technical questions:

1)The boa constrictor at the Zoo winked at Harry during their conversation. As snakes don’t have eyelids, it is impossible for them to blink, for their eyes are protected by transparent scales

2)It states in the Hogwarts letter that you can bring an owl, toad, or cat but Ron brings his rat, Scabbers

3)During the Halloween feast, when the troll is let in, Professor Dumbledore sends the students to their dormitories. However, the troll is said to be in the dungeons, and that is also where the Slytherin dormitories are, meaning Dumbledore has put them directly in harm’s way by sending them there. The logical move would be for every student to stay in the Great Hall, do a roll call, and send prefects/teachers looking for missing students

4)at the end of book 1, Dumbledore said that his and Hermione’s owl crossed in mid-air, however a few pages later Hermione says to Harry that that she ran into Dumbledore on the way to the Owlery to send him the owl

    a really technical one:

5)Harry’s fourteenth birthday is on July 31, 1994, but in his letter to Sirius at the beginning of the book he mentions that his cousin Dudley got really angry and chucked his PlayStation out of the window. The PlayStation was not released in Europe until September 29, 1995. It could not have been imported either because the PlayStation was not released in Japan until December 3, 1994

Most of the fansites will point you in the direction of my mistakes. the following is a letter i sent into a paper in response to someone who taught his child that the halacha is that ones shaitel may not go past ones shoulders ( as per psak of rav…)

Dear person who teaches his daughter that ones shaitel may not go past her shoulders (and all others that do this type of thing):

let me tell you a story that im sure you know but is worth retelling since you seem to have forgotten some of the details. once opon a time there was a man named Adam and a women named Chava. and Hashem said to Adam : “do not eat from this certain tree for on the day you eat of it you will surely die”. then Adam went to Chava and said ” Hashem said not to eat from and not to touch this certain tree for on that day you will surely die”. then a snake came along and pushed Chava into the tree and she didnt die!! Then the snake told her ” well, you see that just like you didnt die from touching the tree, so too you will not surely die for eating from the tree for Hashem just is afraid of you eating from that tree”. then Chava ate from the tree and convinced Adam to eat from it…..

well im sure you know that this story ends with Adam and Chava being thrown out of Gan Eden and is the cause of all the pain and suffering in the world today, and why? Because Adam told Chava a Halacha that wasnt true!! I’m sure you can make the connection and see where Im going with this- DONT TEACH YOUR CHILDREN CHUMRAS AND PORTRAY THEM AS HALOCHOS! the results may c”v be disastrous, and im sure you can figure out what i mean by that.

wishing you and all of klal yisroel much hatzlocha in raising our children in the right way.

As soon as the patient dies the hospice loses money. I’m skeptical that a hospice wouldn’t use an IV in a situation where a patient needed it to live.

This is what I think. I don’t know this for a fact.

well, im glad you added the last line because the way it was explained to me is that a hospice care facility or company is paid for an entire 90 day period even if the patiant dies earlier. this would definitely explain why the practicies detailed above are being carried out.

admittiedly i was a bit skeptical that medicare would pay money like that so i checked it up. this is an excerpt from medicare.gov

How long you can get hospice care

Important: Hospice care is given in benefit periods. You can get

hospice care for two 90-day periods followed by an unlimited

so as you can see, the hospice company just stands to make money if it… -i dont want to say kills, so- causes an early departure of the neshamah. if the patient dies in a week or two they still get paid out for the period- the full 90 days.

    just my 2 cents
