Can you please make mine “a monkey with a typewriter”

in reply to: Salad Dressing #933670

My favorite is just as easy as the ketchup and mayonnaise to prepare… one cup sugar and one cup white vinegar… I like it best on a pepper salad.

in reply to: Filtering the Water #933814

You are allowed to filter water for the sake of drinking right before drinking- from the sink into the cup and drinking it right away.

in reply to: Age of Learning to Read #933641

I guess everyone here learned young… I learned how to read at age four from a computer program made by Microsoft- My Personal Tutor. I don’t think they make it anymore. It was great. It taught the ABC’s, phonics and writing in a fun way.

in reply to: Filtering the Water #933793

If you have decent eyesight and look into the cup and don’t see anything then your fine according to my LOR. We do have a home made filter inside the pipe though…

in reply to: Torah – Where Do You Start? #933761

Do you know his personality type? What does he enjoy learning in secular studies?

in reply to: Torah – Where Do You Start? #933758

It depends on the person you’re teaching… you’ll want to start with something that will give him/her a good taste for learning torah. Sort of like the honey for a three year old boy.

    in reply to: Regents #933219

superme- when it was math A and B you had to take two math courses and one math regent. Now that it’s 1, 2, and 3 you are required to take three math courses and two math regents. You also need two sciences, one foreign language, Global History and American History, as well as English. If you take an additional foreign language, an additional science you may be eligible for an advanced regents diploma.

in reply to: Question for Health: #932892

superme- these are very generic symptoms that can be coming from anything from as minor as a virus to more serious things as well… I wouldn’t worry until the doctor is worried….

    in reply to: Hatzola #932678

About a month ago I had a medical emergency and needed to be taken into the hospital. I had male Hatzala members taking me there, and a male physician in the hospital. At the time I didn’t let myself care because I knew my health comes first. I would have wanted female for both though. Yes, I was grateful for Hatzalas help. I would have appreciated a female member even more. PBA- my father would have driven me in, but traffic where I live is so horrendous the only way to get to the hospital in under a half hour is with sirens.

    in reply to: Hatzola #932643

pba- there are many situations where an all female team would be of use. There are many women capable of handling the entire situation including the transfer without any men. Men cannot possibly understand a woman’s feelings of having a stranger see her in an uncomfortable way. At least that stranger should be a woman. And Health- some woman are perfectly educated and still don’t have time. Ever heard of silent labor?

in reply to: The Starving Thread #931965

4… giggle girl’s not quite right about chassidish people believing women shouldn’t fast. Belz, Skvere and Klozenberg believe that, but almost everyone else doesn’t. My mother and sisters all fast.

    in reply to: Hatzola #932630

Maybe I’m slow, but I don’t see why there can’t be a male going to asses that it’s not a faker trying to get a woman alone in the house. Once that is assessed, why can’t women handle the whole situation including the transfer and driving the ambulance? Also, childbirth isn’t the only time woman would need EMT assistance. A friend’s mother burned herself in a private place and it was very embarrassing for her.

in reply to: Mitzvah Tantz? #1208094

akuperma- a gartel is only used for non-family members. Chosson and Kallah dance holding hands.

wanderingchana- the next person would see 16 spots

in reply to: If You Were a Sandwich… #930030

Whole wheat bread with extra chunky peanut butter and strawberry jam… my sisters love it too.

in reply to: Waking Up Your Kids #993769

I actually worked out a really relaxed way to wake the kids up. About ten minutes before they’re supposed to wake up I adjust the thermostat to be 74 degrees- up from 68 for sleeping. Then when they’re supposed to wake up I say their name quietly into their ear- I don’t whisper, just talk quietly. Their eyes open up at the sound of their name, then I just have to make sure they stay up…

in reply to: Viral Video: Girl Curses Out Judge, Gets Thrown in Jail – Who Is Right? #929697

I agree that she was not acting in a manner suited for a court setting. I don’t know how many of you realized this though- that wasn’t a regular courtroom setting. She was wearing a prisoners uniform and another girl was waiting in line behind her. She was acting silly at first, not really rude- just silly. The judge set her bail and told her good bye. She said adios- which means good bye- back. He called her back and doubled her bail. She got angry that the bail was doubled for no reason and cursed the judge… I say none were right, but a judge is supposed to set an example. I’d side with the girl on the bail.

in reply to: Too Much Candy on Purim #929949

Ummm… ThePurpleOne: It’s a mitzva to have a seuda on Purim. I can’t see how skipping that would be a zchus. Maybe try saying extra tehillim for that.

in reply to: Minhag of Women Shaving Head #1191894

People- you’re forgetting that in all likelihood Kimches did not bath at home but in a bathhouse. Her hair was probably uncovered there.

in reply to: Rant About Neighbors Who Open Your Mail #929269

WIY- maybe he/she opened it without looking at the name, and then was too embarrassed to own up to it. He/She left it by the door to make sure you get it without having to face you. Look at the bright side- at least it’s not bh18’s neighbor stealing it… I have a non-jewish neighbor that can’t keep any tenants for too long because he goes through their mail and their trash. Don’t ask me what he’s looking for…

in reply to: Filming in BP #929356

It was awful… not only did it give a terrible impression of chassidim, it didn’t even begin to make sense… chock full of errors.

If you’re in Brooklyn, there’s a scrap metal place near the Gowanus Canal. I have no clue how much they offer though..

in reply to: Becoming A Rebbetzin #958838

I actually know a case where it went the other way around… The wife is a famous mechaneches, so people called her rebbetzin. Being as it can’t be Mr. & Rebbetzin, it became Rabbi & Rebbetzin. He does not fill any position that would give him the title.

in reply to: In Witch He Snorted #1115478

Book 1 has a contradiction within itself… On the acceptance letter it says that students are allowed a cat, owl, or toad. On the train we’re introduced to Scabbers, a rat.

in reply to: Diet Pills From Brazil Being Sold In Brooklyn #942370

Yenta- don’t call the person a name, rather the action. They are not insane, they are doing an insane thing. There are much better ways to lose weight. If dieting with the help of a nutritionist doesn’t work, discuss the lap band surgery with your doctor. Many people have done it, and are very happy. It is a very safe surgery as far as surgeries go. It’s for sure safer than taking pills not approved by the FDA.

in reply to: Full Sibling or Half-Sibling #1137468

Halachicly if two people share a parent regardless of whether the shared parent is the mother or the father, they are considered full siblings. There is no halachic concept of a half-sibling.

in reply to: Yair Lapid to Chareidim- you won #927460

I find it funny that Yair Lapid says you won so now you have to defend the country. Since when does the loser decide what the winner should do? I always thought that the winner decides how to go further… I guess I was mistaken.

in reply to: Women Wearing Costumes on Purim? #1008193

I don’t know why everyone here seems to be under the impression that wearing a costume will attract undue attention… depending on where I’m being for purim, that’s how I’ll dress up. But I will dress up every purim. One year when my hair was shoulder length I wore extensions in my hair to make it waist lenghth, and I wore earings that were totally not my style. This year I plan on wearing a wig of a totally different color than my hair. For people who know me, they’ll see right away that it’s a costume, but for strangers I look like everyone else.

in reply to: Yair Lapid to Chareidim- you won #927430

Barack Obama is not a descendant of slaves, although his wife is.

in reply to: Yair Lapid to Chareidim- you won #927415

I’m not Israeli, but I’m definitely chareidi and both of my parents work full time as computer programmers. My father didn’t really learn English in school, so he was given books to learn from at home. He taught himself programming without going to college. Yes, it’s possible. My mother didn’t go to college either, just a few courses.

Imaofthree – there already is such a thing. It’s called imamother.

in reply to: Some notes about what it means to be truly poor… #1001112

Boruch Hashem I’m not in a situation now where Shabbos is difficult, but quoting my father it’s better to eat peanut butter sandwiches on shabbos than taking money from tzedakka to buy food. If the food during the week is also from tzedakka than the Shabbos food should be special.

in reply to: Problem With Food!!! #921050

Try eating foods that are easier to eat… or make sure your food is fully chewed before swallowing. The stomach can’t do mechanical digestion, only the teeth can. It can’t handle big chunks of food.

in reply to: Jewifying someone's iPod #920986

OS means Operating System. Every computer has an operating system. I think he’s referring to a much older operating system from the early 1990’s…

in reply to: Fertility concerns about a prospective shidduch #920477

anon1m0us- I think Artiste was asking whether it’s more likely that this girl will have issues than an average girl. I don’t know the answer, as this level of intervention isn’t around long enough to know whether the problems can pass down. I do know a woman that had issues and some of her daughters have had issues as well, which does seem to show a genetic factor. This issue was known when they were teenagers. It might be possible to find out if there are known issues now. They might not reveal this information if they’re not asked. This is purely anecdotal though.

in reply to: How to stop a very, very stubborn case of lice #918469

Lice and nits are more sensitive to heat than skins, so if you take a blowdryer on high for 30 seconds per section of scalp it kills them. Note- it doesn’t remove them. They are easier to remove once they’re dead though. Gather her hair in a pony or braid before school to keep her from getting reinfested from other children.

in reply to: How to stop a very, very stubborn case of lice #918465

How old is she? If she’s more than three years old you might want to try heat treatment

in reply to: How do you actually forgive someone? #917559

Bless You: Forgive and forget is not a jewish concept. What the person did to you can be as real to you and as painful as if it happened a minute ago. In order to be considered true forgiveness, you have to feel in your heart that you don’t want any bad to happen to that person for what he/she did to you. You have to let go of any thoughts of revenge, even from heaven. That’s true forgiveness.

in reply to: How do you actually forgive someone? #917546

You don’t have to let go of the pain in order to forgive someone. The pain can stay, as long as you don’t wish bad to happen to the person who caused it to you.
