This topic makes me smile. And I thought call waiting was the rudest thing, when it first came out! One time I was downstairs in my basement and the phone was ringing upstairs so I dropped what I was doing and raced to the phone….I answered, it was a neighbor who said hello and then said “do you mind holding on, I got a CLICK (another call)”. I hung up! Yes, I did mind! If you make a call, don’t do it when you are expecting another important call!

But as with most things, we all just get used to all these new devices and get on with our lives that are made easier by these technological advances…

If there would be more seminaries in America girls wouldn’t have to go to Israel. There aren’t so many options in the states.

I think that one of the problems is that the Bais Yaakov’s installed a uniform policy instead of dealing with tznius in the school. This is a good and easy solution in the classroom but what are the girls wearing at home and on shabbos? Maybe we should have a no uniform policy but you have to buy clothing that fits with the school standards and skirt lengths.

I also think it is very important for mothers to wear long skirts and be an example for their daughters. And husbands should tell their wives in a gentle way that the skirt is too short and he would like her to wear longer skirts.

I was at a shivah house and frum women came in with short skirts and when they sat down it was REALLY not tznius. I felt like giving them a blanket or something to cover their legs because nebach they kept tugging and pulling down their skirt to cover but to no avail.

May Hashem send us the strength we need to fight all our Yaatzer Horos and send the geulah!

SJSinNYC, if this is the case, that a family can pay tuition but refuses because they want to pay for luxuries, I am surprised because the tuition committees are not handing out tuition breaks so easily. If they get away with it, then Hashem deals with those kind of people and chas v’shalom their children’s chinuch may suffer as a result.

I think that if a parent cannot pay full tuition then they should help support the school in other ways. For example, the boys and girls can collect soda bottles and get the five cent deposit and the parents who can’t pay should drive these kids once a week to redeem the bottles. I know boys who collect money this way for Rubashkin, and it does add up.

The schools and parent body have to come up with ways of raising funds because tuition alone is not enough and the schools are closing. Yeshivos have to become our priority because without Jewish education for our children there is no future.

After the yomim tovim, you will IY”H be getting mailings from the high schools with information about their open house and entrance exams. And don’t forget your daughter will have her own idea about which school she would like to attend, depending on where her friends are going.

By the way, the Bais Yaakov in Manhatten is VERY expensive, so be warned….

I am not so keen on fourteen year olds having to commute too far so I would look into Shevach if I were you. I never sent there but I know that Mrs. Krohn is excellent, I think she is one of the principals. GOOD LUCK and a good gebenched year!

I agree with you, “young but not stupid” (love that name!) Not only that, listen to this…. last year my daughter was a day camp counselor, and the camp was going on a trip, and she was told she had to pay to take her group on the trip! She was earning less per day than what the trip cost. I kept quiet and just paid because my daughter loved the job but I thought it was not right.

Most teenagers don’t work for the money, they work for the fun of it, they love kids and they have friends that also work there.

I guess the nice weather today has us all thinking of summer.

So if I am walking along and a Yid asks for tzaddakah, should I not pass him money because it is not tznius? Or should I throw the dollar on the floor and make him pick it up?

This reminds me of one of the guys I dated who explained to me that he learned that you are not supposed to hold a door open for a lady because it is not tznius to walk behind a woman.

Don’t start a new minhag, it’s enough the parents give money on Chanuka, especially with this economy. If a family has quite a few children and lots of teachers that adds up to money that people may not be able to afford. How about a mishloach manos card, or simply a note wishing them a happy purim and thanking them for being such a great teacher?

What you describe is a typical Israeli family. Lots of kids in three bedroom apartments, working two jobs, and of course no car. If she has food to give her family she is in a better place than many others.

Some people choose to live outside of Jerusalem where they can get bigger apartments for less money.

really nothing you can do but give her your support and encouragement.

A woman was murdered in cold blood. She was 26 years old, and loved animals. She had a mother, father, sister and brother who waited for 24 years for justice to be served. I do feel bad that a Jewish person was put to death but this is not the first time a Jew was put to death and probably won’t be the last. Instead, let’s do something constructive for the kids at risk so they won’t commit atrocious crimes. Be a big brother or sister to a kid that is off the derech, project yes is in great need of mentors. Or say tehillim, give tzaddakah in his name.

I find this post very cute to read, but ettie is right, enough with the labels. Also, if food is used to nickname people it detracts from it’s chashivus and the true matanah it is from Hashem that he gives us food to eat.

I am not surprised that people will reject a shidduch because of a sibling. There are schools that will reject a girl because of an older sibling. In both cases, the boy has lists….the schools have so many applicants. This is the reality.

The truth is that in the case that Yiddishekup 101 wrote about, would the family of the girl really want a family that has a problem with her brother? Clearly this is not her beshairt, leave it and move on.

Smalltowngirl, you sound like a GREAT mother, keep it up! There are many people in my community who are sending their boys to public school, with a kippa and tzitzis. Ingredients

    1/3 cup coarsley ground pepper

    1 teaspoon ground cardamom

    2 (5 pound) boneless rib-eye roasts

    2 cups soy sauce

    1 1/2 cups cider vinegar

    2 tablespoons tomato paste

    2 teaspoons garlic powder

    2 teaspoons paprika

    Directions

1.Combine the pepper and cardamom; rub over roasts. Place each in a shallow baking dish. In a bowl, combine the soy sauce, vinegar, tomato paste, garlic powder and paprika. Pour over the roasts; turn several times. Cover and refrigerate overnight.

2.Place each roast in a roasting pan. Bake, uncovered, at 350 degrees F for 2 hours or until meat reaches desired doneness (for medium-rare, a meat thermometer should read 145 degrees F; medium, 160 degrees F; well-done, 170 degrees F).

    Confused Tatty-

Bnos Sorah is very warm, Mrs.Epstien is the head of the seminary and she is very approachable and friendly. The aym bayit, Mrs.Powitz, lives on the bottom floor and she is a doll, very sweet, my daughters love her.

The day varies but they start at 8:45 and depending on the day they have evening classes but they do get a break some afternoons. I know my daughter is always working on these reports and she has to give a lesson plan to a real class. Many of the teachers are Israeli and they teach in Hebrew. It’s a seminary for a girl who likes to be challenged. What is nice about bnos sorah is that they don’t choke the girls with a million rules. There is supervision but they show the girls that they are adults and they are selected because they are trusted. I hope this helps. best thing is for your daughter to call up a bnos sorah girl who is there NOW to ask her what it’s like, that is what my oldest daughter did. Good Luck!

ConfusedTatty, this year my daughter is in Bnos Sorah, she loves it! The teachers are fantastic, she says she could sit and listen to them all day. My older daughter went there too, and I have visited the seminary and met the staff. It is a very warm seminary but for a more academic type of girl. If you have any further questions feel free to ask.

I wash the dishes shabbos morning, having had them soak overnight using seeallsides method. Who has strength to deal with dishes friday night now that the zman is so late? I would rather get to bed and wash up the dishes in the morning.

When I’m not feeling well, I’ll use real glasses and cutlery but I will use nice dishes that can be reused or thrown out. I bought some really nice ones at amazing saving, also at costco. I don’t even own real china, don’t have the space for it, and my correl dishes are light and easy to wash. They are nice enough for me, they make them in all kinds of pretty designs these days.

We have a party right after megillah reading so all the people come with small children who cry and make noise at megillah reading. This year I was smart and did not go to that laining, I went to the second laining for women only and there were no kids and it was nice and quiet.
