I was in PTI (the yeshiva in Vancouver) for 3 years of Beis Medrash. I love the city, rabbiem, and go back a few times a year. Are you looking for High School or Beis Medrash?

I also have friends in Dallas, but having never been there myself I can’t really give you a fair judgement of the place.

I have a close friend who went from 0-60 and unfortunately only lasted about a year and a half before falling back into old habits. BUT he still lets me know weeks where he DOES keep Shabbos because he knows there’s something there! I’m just supportive and hope that with time he will gradually get back on track. The danger of “all or nothing” for someone who wasn’t raised frum is real. I have a chavrusa who went more gradually and now is one of the best guys in Yeshiva because he was able to grow at his own pace.

As a former staff member in a few camps for 8 summers, I feel more than qualified to debate any of the people in the Coffee Room who feel this isn’t highway robbery!

First of all: Why should be penalized for liking your job/it being “fun”? If a guy likes law, or making food,or likes saving peoples lives should we stop paying him?

Second: A certain camp made the mistake, while trying to tell us we need LESS off-days, of breaking down how much kids parents are paying PER day for a camper to be there. Multiply that by 12-15 kids per bunk. Why are staff getting paid peanuts??

Tips are the PARENTS display of hakaras hatov, the camp can’t be yotzei with that!

Also, you kinda have to because what yeshiva is thrilled to hear you were gasp working in the city! The structure with davening and learning IS important so why be penalized for being a good Jew??

Also, have you ever tried to watch 15 teenage boys for 2 months??

Droid and Elik- who are calling me an anti-Semite I said that

I SAW instances of Chillul Hashem today and in the past to back up my statement. Second of all, halivai anti-Semitism should be people being disgruntled of Jews taking advantage of a freebie! Somehow to label a fellow Jew pointing something out with the same terminology used for people like Hitler yms”v and other such Sonei Yisroel is DISGUSTING and IMMATURE besides just downright PATHETIC!

First of all it DOES say it’s limited.Read both the sign on the door and their website.

Unfortunately, it probably is b/c certain Yidden have abused it in the past. I saw certain frum Jews today abusing the privilege and I don’t live in Flatbush.

My rebbe always said that “a mentch doesn’t drink out of the bottle.” There is a certain refinement to pouring whatever beverage it is (water, soda, beer etc.)into a cup. However, not being “refined” does’t make it “disgusting,” rather just average behavior, and as bochurim (and Yidden I would extrapolate)I assume the goal is to strive to be refined.

Feif Un- “Some people will say, “But look at people singing Carlebach! They’re so happy and lively!” Well, it’s well documented that drinking alcohol actually causes you to be more depressed than you might already be. Yet when people are drunk, they get very lively too.”

That statement is TOTALLY TWISTED! Alcohol is a DEPRESSANT, which means that it DEPRESSES your central nervous system(causing lack of inhibition, lack of balance, among other things )-NOT YOU!!

Albeit, if someone who was ALREADY clinically depressed drank it may make his depression worse, but that is only b/c he is “letting go” in the wrong way! Usually, dropping inhibitions and burdens makes people HAPPY 🙂

Were Chazal wrong by your logic by saying “Ein Simcha Eleh B’Yayin”?

Was Dovid HaMelech wrong in Tehillim when he said “V’Yayin Yisamach l’vav Enosh?”

WHY would it be a mitzva to drink on Purim if it MADE YOU DEPRESSED??

in reply to: Tuition committee requests #741826

    SJSinNYC-

“I know members of scholarship committees and unfortunately, families cannot be trusted anymore.”

SO DO I . And I’m saddened that you feel Jews are no longer trustworthy. MAYBE if they didn’t feel so violated by these committees they wouldn’t be so elusive??

“Lets not forget that scholarships are tzedaka and you are supposed to avoid taking tzedaka.”

Funny how these same schools preach that you should go into learning, thereby GUARANTEEING themselves no chance of collecting tuition. And also funny how when it’s Abba/Tatty/Daddy who is taking the Tzedaka to LEARN it’s Ok but for kids chinuch it’s not???

And please note, the specific camps I referenced often run $5,000+ (up to about $8,000).

Wasn’t talking about those. How about the 2-3,000 BEFORE scholarships??

Lets deal with these expenses one at a time:

“Cheap vacation – $500 minimum (including gas, place to stay, attractions).”

Why do not people not deserve a vacation,if not only to stay sane?

“Cleaning help – usually a minimum of $1000/year (not a real necessity unless you have a disability or severe depression or something)”

OR because BOTH parents have to work.PLEASE don’t judge people! Does everyone you know who has cleaning help disabled or severely depressed??? I DOUBT IT

“Kosher food – beans are kosher and cheap. Eggs are cheap. There are many cheaper alternatives to chicken and beef, the most expensive parts of the kosher diet. You can easily save $100 month on your grocery bill if you try.”

The SCHOOLS need your extra $1200 so THEY can serve fleishigs EVERY NIGHT(most yeshivos do)???

“Your attitude shows that Yeshiva tuition is not a priority. How is saving money at the expense of tuition ethical? And you wonder why tuition committees need to grill people?”

My attitude is that IT IS A PRIORITY! Being able to eat supper or have a few days with your kids is not SAVING MONEY! Peopel work to support a family,NOT to pay tuition. Unfortunately, family and sanity don’t matter to some of theses committees as long as they can wring you dry of every last cent you COULD give up!

in reply to: Tuition committee requests #741808
    showerzinger
    Member

My brother always jokes about sending his kids to public school and letting Oorah “rescue” them. These committees are absolutely out of control! Even Obama wouldn’t dare be that intrusive!

Obviously, they are trying to catch the yechidim that are trying to slip through the cracks and rip them off…BUT at the expense of everyone else, who as Jews have a chezkas kashrus and lets be honest do you think if they could afford it they would intentionally take away parnassah from fellow Jews??

As for what they consider “luxuries” is just wrong on many levels:

Sleepaway camp is no longer a luxury since THE SCHOOLS say that the kids can’t be “hanging out” for the summer. You can’t have it both ways!

    KOSHER FOOD IS EXPENSIVE NEWSFLASH

Not wanting to put your kids on a “fast food diet” that has proven to cause obesity is a valid reason to spend more.

A vacation once a year that people save up for is very important family time (which the schools are so cheap on) and to charge someone full tuition when the vacation is a fraction of the break is just absurd.

Also, there is a new seminary that is opening that claims they can give scholarships,so you can suggest that to her as well. Hatzlacha!

real brisker is REALLY starting to get on mine, and i’m sure other peoples, nerves. His warped view of world, hashkafa, and the world in general is blatant in most of comments. This can stem from two things: Either he A. actually thinks that in which case a dose of reality would be nice OR B. he doesn’t believe a word of what he’s saying and just likes causing machlokes and getting under peoples skin. NEITHER are befitting of a Ben Torah of the caliber he claims he is. BTW NOTHING ASSUR ABOUT HAVING SAME-GENDER FRIENDS, IF anything should be EASIER with Frum Jews b/c the lack of interaction with the other gender!

ANYWAY to get back to the question…The reality is that by and large most people develop their social circle while they are less established and have less things going on their lives. This makes complete sense b/c TIME is a necessary component in any relationship, and as your commitments to a spouse, job, children etc. grow their is less time for socializing. That DOESN’T mean you can’t make friends later in life, but it will be harder b/c everyone already has commitments.
