Filters are good so you don’t accidentally come across something you don’t want to. Google can be a problem with this as mentioned. safe search can eliminate some of these problems.
Many people can get around filters if they really want to. But it is still a deterrent. The more steps you have to take to get there the more chance that your yetzer tov will step in at some point in the process and stop you. Everyone has the Pintele Yid in them telling them to do the right thing.
YW Moderator-42ModeratorOomis. I assume that the term Shlumiel comes from the fact that the Nassi with that name acted like a Shlimiel at the end of his life. See the end of Parshas Balak.
What does R’ Chaim say about someone named Joseph using multiple names?
YW Moderator-42ModeratorMod 80 wrote:
Am I the only one that likes what Joseph says?
i usually agree with him, when he states his position in a calm, thoughtful manner.
I used to be a big fan of Joseph before I become a moderator. At that point he became very annoying and even threatening. I started to see another side of him. I realized that he was not a true ehrliche person as he makes himself seem to be. He has done some things which a true ben-Torah should never do.
His agenda I used to like. But then I realized that he approaches it the wrong way. He pushes his agenda which is often correct. But some things are better left unsaid, or should be said in the proper way. When you push things the way he does it is unlikely that you will have a true impact on the people you are trying to reach. The more modern people who he is trying to be mikareiv just think of him as an ultra right wing fanatic and therefore discard everything that he says. He is the boy who cried wolf (sorry wolfish) So when he posts the same stuff under many screen names it makes them look down on all Yeshivish people which can have a very negative effect.
YW Moderator-42ModeratorI am not a buki in halacha but I’m sure someone who is can come up with a situation that it “legal genaiva”.
Unfortunately, there are many people who think that there is “muttar genaiva” or “illegal yet muttar”. We don’t promote that on Yeshiva World although some people might think it is Yeshivish to pull shtick, we believe that if it is illegal than it is probably assur (and if not than it probably shouldn’t be publicized online anyway)
YW Moderator-42Moderatorspeaking of scams we do not allow illegal geneiva on this site. posts deleted. thinking, perhaps you should think before posting such things. i will be dan lekaf zchus and assume you didn’t realize that what you posted was illegal
YW Moderator-42Moderatordoes this have anything to do with 42?
YW Moderator-42ModeratorI think this only applies in public places where everyone wears shoes. I doubt this is a problem in the house.
YW Moderator-42ModeratorGo Popa Bears!
YW Moderator-42ModeratorMy Rebbeim taught us to be mentchlich to the garbage men, to say good morning, thank you, etc.
so i guess if we put together our rebbeim they are telling us to pay attention to sports!
YW Moderator-42ModeratorWay back a bunch of people got into signatures.
I think it started with anonymisss using ~a~ as a signature and Kapusta followed. The Wolf has always had a sig as long as I remember.

YW Moderator-42Moderatorthis explains how joseph can afford to spend the time posting to the coffee room all day under multiple screen names and ip addresses. how about hiring a rebbe to teach you how to properly be “mekarev our modern orthodox brethren”. then you can sponsor a raise for the moderators
YW Moderator-42ModeratorYes, alcohol is fine in moderation – I always drink while moderating popa’s posts
YW Moderator-42Moderatorwith all these people off from school and work tomorrow we expect a busy day in the coffee room! we will need mods so for that i am back (and hopefully popa_bar_abba will be back as well to provide us with interesting content)
YW Moderator-42Moderatorwe tried that around purim time. it did not go well. if you want unmoderated forums there is a whole internet out there. this is yeshiva world.

December 3, 2010 9:04 am at 9:04 am in reply to: Who Composed The Song Tatte Tatte & Who Sang It First? #714868YW Moderator-42ModeratorIn A’Vinkeleh from Dveykus 2 was composed by Shweky’s Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem Davidowitz the Rosh Yeshiva in Rochester. I think the lyrics of the original song and Shweky’s version are both by Abie Rotenberg
YW Moderator-42ModeratorSEIT is kind of like Siyum except instead of seeing ‘um you see IT
YW Moderator-42Moderatori do most of my moderating between 945 and 947am
YW Moderator-42Moderatoranother good idea is to list emergency contacts in this way as well. start your phone book with “1 ICE …” you should probably label it with name and relatioship so the person using it knows who they are calling.
YW Moderator-42Moderatorno need for aaaa just put a space after the first a and it will likely come up first. on some phones using numbers can help as well. some phones put numbers and characters in the beginning others at the end so you need to experiment to make sure it works
YW Moderator-42ModeratorBased on my research abbazabba and Dovv are definitely 2 separate people. Dovv wrote the song. backinaction seems to be abbazabba taking credit for his friend’s song. Let’s get back on topic and comment on the song rather than who is the author.
YW Moderator-42ModeratorThis is just a recollection I had. Don’t take my word for it, look into it if you are worried.
YW Moderator-42Moderatorlike if you just peel em, and drop them
If I recall correctly, the miscarriage problem is only by nails that were cut normally. I don’t think that one is considered a rasha if they drop peeled or bitten nails
YW Moderator-42Moderatorwrite the date in the text. last names can help too. that way you can find out updates yourself. people should realize that they can edit forwarded texts too to update them etc. there is no need for a million fwd’s in each text.
YW Moderator-42ModeratorYes. We show favoritism. One of the lessons we teach here in the CR is that not everyone is created equal. As the Maccabees said “that’s not fair”.
YW Moderator-42ModeratorJosh31, you forgot volvie and The Big One and a few othes. He has 345, the gematria of Moshe
YW Moderator-42ModeratorQuote from another site:
“A-Rod leads Rangers to first World Series Appearance…”
Now we know why they traded him to the Yankees in the first place… Go Rangers!!
YW Moderator-42ModeratorHows everyone doing? Long time since we Generally Shmoozed.
YW Moderator-42Moderator“A few years ago one of my children took on a chumrah that I didn’t keep. My first reaction was negative — are my standards not good enough for you? Later, when I thought about it, I realized that I was dead wrong. My child wanted to improve herself, why should I stand in her way? I apologized for my reaction and encouraged her to follow her conviction.”
I once heard (probably somewhere here in the CR) of a woman who was complaining to her Rav about her son being too frum. The rav told her that all teenagers are rebellious in some way and this is his way of being rebellious and she should be glad he is not going to the other extreme.
Whether you want to call it improving themselves or being rebellious, the point is that you should think things through before trying to argue with teenagers.
YW Moderator-42Moderatorya, unfortunately no one sees the stickies. But if we unstick them then they get lost
YW Moderator-42Moderator“i have been told by many respected people that i must loose this weight and i just need people to answer back who are going to actually answer my question…”
Why don’t you ask these “respected people” what their opinion is on how you should lose weight rather than anonymous CR people. It is probably a good idea anyway to have a support group of people you know who are giving you advice and helping you follow up on it
YW Moderator-42ModeratorDon’t we have something like this already as a sticky topic?

YW Moderator-42ModeratorYW Moderator-42Moderatormyfriend: The most important thing to look for is a tznius’dik girl.
oomis: Tznius does not confer the status of a girl with good middos on anyone. It MIGHT, but there are lots of girls who dress a certain way to be tzniusdig, who are selfish, self-centered, pieces of work.
Sister Bear: You can’t judge a girl based on her mode of dress.
I don’t think that myfriend was only referring to mode of dress. Tsnius is about the way a women acts, her dress is just part of it.
That being said, tsnius can be a good indicator of good middos in general, but as mentioned above some girls will be very tzanua but have issues with other middos, others will have a nisayon when it comes to tznius but be a baalas middos tovos otherwise. You have to look at the whole picture.
YW Moderator-42Moderatorchaerliehall wrote: (4) Chumrot: If either of you will give up your favorite chumrot in the interest of shalom bayit, you have a problem.
I assume you meant: If either spouse will not give up a chumra for shalom bayis then they probably shouldn’t be married.
I other words, chumros are nice if they don’t hurt your marriage. If your chumra is more important to you than your spouse then you have problems. Of course if the spouse is OK with it then by all means continue the chumra…
YW Moderator-42ModeratorI have heard that many of the questions you get are not appropriate for B’nei Torah to be reading, therefore I have not applied to be a guide.

YW Moderator-42Moderatorapushatayid:
“Tznius in front of Non Jews”.
I think the title for this thread is wrong.
Does it matter if the person in front of you is a co-religionist or of the same gender? Shivisi hashem linegdi tamid.
I use the following rule of thumb. If I wont do it/dress that way in front of my boss, I sure as heck am not doing it in front of the ribbono shel olam.
Do you take showers in front of the RBS”O? Would you take a shower in front of your boss?
There is an inyun to always be tzanua but different situations call for different levels. Women are allowed to exercise. They are even allowed to dress less tznuis while exercising among woman. The question of the OP is whether this less tznius form of dress is OK in front of non-Jewish men.
YW Moderator-42Moderatorlol, the original title was “Beware”, we added the parentheses later
YW Moderator-42ModeratorI have a question. Perhaps this is a hoax and has never happened. But the idea might be true. Putting a fake baby in a car seat is something that criminals can do even if it was never “officially” done by a gang. People should be made aware that we live in dangerous times and that something like this should be reported to police. You shouldn’t stop in a dangerous area.
About the eggs and water, the Snopes article doesn’t seem to say anything about this. I have no idea if that is true or not. That part might be a real hoax.
If these things are not happening at all then perhaps it is better not to needlessly scare people. But it is also good to know this type of “trivia”
YW Moderator-42Moderatorkapusta, have you been checked for bugs recently?
YW Moderator-42ModeratorIf you are a mod then you can just simply edit the offending post(s) to add some spaces or replace long links with link tags, this usually fixes the page. Whenever the pages get messed up I usually try to do that. If there is a long URL I will replace it with a “click here” link
YW Moderator-42ModeratorFrom another Web Site:
Parents then have to assign a chaver, or friend, to get detailed Web-browsing histories automatically e-mailed to them by a $5-per-month monitoring service called WebChaver.
Administrators at the 763-student Orthodox elementary and high school say the system is necessary to prevent online experiences that just are not kosher.
[rabbis]
Some parents scoffed at the Big Brother edict.
While other Jewish schools have suggested parents use the spy system, Tiferes Yisroel is the first local one to actually demand that they do.
Only about 20 parents have agreed, a source said.
Rabbis at the school urged parents choose an eagle-eyed, and preferably female, chaver.
WebChaver, run by a New Jersey-based nonprofit, will give school officials a list of the parents who sign up and their chavers.
Administrators at the school did not return calls seeking comment.

Mod 42 – I’m really sorry, but I’m totally confused at what you wrote. Do you mind explaining how what you wrote is in response to what I wrote? I’m really lost. Thanks.
I was just explaining what you wrote. Basically that when people make everything out to be halacha and don’t differentiate between halacha and chumra, then people will no longer take them seriously.
August 9, 2010 6:54 pm at 6:54 pm in reply to: Television: A Cry of Anguish and Appeal to Our Jewish Brethren 📺 #1192974YW Moderator-42ModeratorMax well:
It is quite notable that we have dozens of rabbonim listed against television and not one listed for it (other than anonymous assertions of nameless “rabbis” by people who feel “comfortable” making the claim but not “comfortable” baking it up), in over a year of this thread/discussion taking place!
Of course no Rabbi is going to issue a “kol koreh” saying specifically to watch TV. A Rabbi might tell his talmidim that in their situation it is muttar and possibly even advisable but I can’t imagine any Rabbi making a blanket statement that it is required or advisable to have a TV. As a general rule, it is inadvisable, hence the letter quoted at the beginning of the thread with many gedolims’ signatures. (as an aside, I heard a story about one of the Gedolim listed that he once brought a TV -yes, a TV, not just a video monitor- into his house for a specific purpose)
YW Moderator-42ModeratorSister Bear
The problem with people taking chumros and turning them into Halachos is that when that person says that x is assur and it really is, no one will listen cuz they’ll think it’s another chumrah. So people should really be careful about what they say is assur or not. (I’m not just talking about people on the internet)
It’s the boy who cried Wolf. When one person starts calling every chumra a halacha then people won’t take them seriously anymore. Unfortunately, it’s not just the one person who they stop taking seriously but anyone who is “frummer” than them. They will assume that every halacha they are told is just another chumra. If WolfishMusings ever wants to correct someone on a real halachik mistake they are making they will just assume that he is being machmir, they won’t take him seriously. It is therefore important for him to point out all the absurd things that people are saying for what they are so that when the time does come for him to post an actual halacha, people will take him seriously.
YW Moderator-42ModeratorShvartze Wolf as only R’ Shlomo can tell it/sing it over.
YW Moderator-42ModeratorWolfishMusings, are you a lamid vavnik? That would explain why you seem like such an apikores to so many people here, they are seeing themselves in your posts!
