I don’t use twitter or instagram. Everyone is complaining about Twitter silencing individual expression. YWN and this place also censor individuals expression but none here are complaining. I don’t get it. But then I don’t take this venue as seriously as some do.

Coffee addict can you enumerate our Presidents impeachable actions? Is it reducing the national debt? Is it some of the lowest unemployment numbers in generations? (A drop from 6+% to -4%.) Was it the over 100k folks turned away at the border or the 29 terrorists taken into custody at our border? Reducing hunger with the additional food stamp allotments due to Covid? The most judges confirmed since Kennedy was president? The most diverse cabinet a US president has ever had. Or was it approving off shore wind energy projects?

The tools of Alex Jones, Info Wars, Rumble, Crosstalk et al are clinging to the story that these atrocities are ‘made up’ just like Jones did with the Sandy Hook shootings, the OK city bombings.

Duh, so if none of you check references why participate in a process that mandates them? Its only fair that both you and your parents let the women know you won’t be checking references. Based on your FB you are now doing simcha videos. What an excellent organic way to meet people. Sometimes it comes down to someone who knows somebody.

Over the years Ari has had various complaints about the shidduch process on a variety of internet platforms. I’m sure that many of his questions are a reflection of his being raised by two parents, both professionals and physicians who likely are not as far to the right as he is. That being said, at the age of almost 30 it’s time for Ari to be proactive and perhaps find a more organic way of meeting the mate Hashem has chosen for him that isn’t dependent on his parents checking references.

Ari why not post your shidduch resume or a link to it? Or tell us a bit about yourself, what you do for a living, your aspirations of a torah true home, will you work after marriage or expect support?

rightwriter, it only takes a google to find a farmers market or green market near you. Most farmers markets take food stamps and provide food stamp bonuses. You picks are just that. They are farms where you pick your produce. These are boons to folks who can (not rocket science) or preserve food but don’t have room to grow their own. Prices are usually lower at you picks. Around here you can do you picks for beans (fresh green, favas, fresh chickpeas fresh English pea, fresh edamame, tomatoes, peppers, kirbys, stone and seeded fruits, different melons, greens and assorted berries. Where I live our farmers market is open year round two days a week and three from April to Nov. In the winter we have hard squash (great for dehydrating), winter greens, a variety of tubers (yacon etc), beets, winter greens etc.

It’s not a matter of growing your own food. I know folks who go to U picks to get fresh beans and tomatoes, and veggies to can. They take their kids to U picks for peaches and apples to can or dehydrate, same with berries. Farmers markets are pretty ubiquitous now a days and CSAs make fresh veggies in season very affordable. I no long have a need for a fore quarter of beef but I do have a friend who raises lamb for the table and I have the same arrangement for my lamb as CTL has for his beef. I also bought into a flock of chickens through someone the traveling Shochet introduced me to some years back. Poultry prices should be going sky high, millions of chickens in DE, IW, PA and AR are being killed due to avian flu.

Americans are relatively spoiled, they want to eat what they want to eat when they want it. The average American buys expensive fresh fruit and veg (out of season) that are transported sometimes thousands of miles.

Certainly a lot has to do with lifestyle and I’m grateful that I’m financially comfortable and not paying for heating oil or wondering if I can afford that next box of diapers like some women do.

Point of information Ukraine only exports about 3% of the world wheat. Russia is the #1 exporter of wheat in the world. I live in a state that grows a lot of wheat, future prices are up about 5%.

It’s likely that Russia and Ukraine will suffer from food shortages this winter. Combine those shortages with an influx of over 4 million refuges into Europe and it’s obvious some nations economies will suffer.

As mentioned above America’s issues will be supply chain, failure to support our commercial rail system will leave supply chains largely dependent on costly fossil fuels to transport goods.

Naturally Americans will be whining if they only have six different choices in tp rather than the previous 18.

Again, I don’t live on the east coast. I do live several degrees (lat) higher than NYC. For a few years I was commuting to work and got on a vanpool at 6am (before sunrise) and I got home after 5pm (well after sunset most winter days. I did not do well without seeing daylight (except through office windows) five days a week.

As to mens prayer times, well we didn’t always have DST or time zones or a means of keeping time, a solution will be found.

Filtering home water doesn’t cost ‘a fortune’. I’ve lived on wells for the past 30 years and have used a variety of water filter options. I considered installing RO when my home was being built. The quality of the water didn’t warrant it. I have an under sink filter for each faucet, where one would desire drinking or cooking water. My well water is pumped and treated with UV before it goes into a holding tank. Water that is used on my gardens or the pool does not use the water tank and is a separate system. I think that many folks don’t consider the waste involved with bottled water.

I don’t know if you’ve ever had a comprehensive class covering the Constitution. SOTU is covered under the Constitution, Article II section 3 clause 1. After reading, I hope you will reach some clarity as to why and what it covers. I’ve listened to SOTUs from Ike to the present. They are are all different and reflect current issues that are/were contemporaneous to the times they were delivered.

I’m not quite sure of your point. Non observant people work on Shabbos. Why shouldn’t public transport be available to them? Not everyone (in Israel or the US) works a straight M-F.

in reply to: what is the cause of income inequality in the jewish commnuity? #2035250
    Amil Zola

First generation American here and the first of my generation to graduate from uni. Our third generation all have professional degrees. Those degrees and income allowed their sources of revenue to expand to real estate and business investment. FWIW my mother worked in the sweatshops all of her working life and my father was a factory worker. By and large all that went off to higher ed paid their own way. In my family (just plain frum) most all owned homes they purchased from wages before they married. (Far different real estate market than 2021.) Avg size family is 3 kids. Kids worked in family (or friends of family) businesses as soon as legally permitted.

As I write this, I can see how we’ve been accruing ‘dynastic’ wealth. But with that wealth came a responsibility to assist Jewish institutions financially. Most of moved out of the tri state area, to more affordable parts of the country as well. I can see how gap year seminaries, keeping up with the Cohens lifestyle, large simchas and the incumbent expenses limit savings and strain family finances, esp. in larger families.

I went to public schools and I agree with AAQs original premise. I read a lot from the Imas complaining about homework. I have no input as todays Jewish schools handle it. When I was in school my HW from Jr High to HS was read and be able to discuss the stuff in class or perform the math functions. I had integrated core classes so science, maths, foreign language and latin, chem, lit and history all integrated different facets of other curriculum.

Someone up thread brought up Kyles maturity. I’ve been a lifelong gun owner, as a kid I belonged to the local NJ 4H sharpshooters, heck I even have two AR styled rifles in the gun safe. I had a carry permit for years and have taken numerous gun safety classes. Range shooting is a pastime I enjoy in this era of Covid. I just cant get it through my head that this child of 17 went into the situation having no experience, and the fact that his mother drove him boggles my mind. I’ve spent thousands (that I can afford) on ammo and range time, and cowboy shooting competitions. I couldn’t imagine dropping into the situation like he did, even with my training and skill set. IMHO

As a woman living alone, hiring a male is out of the question for me. Feel free to call her a ‘handy person’ if that floats your boat.

The Lakewood Scoop has a letter today from a woman complaining that cleaning ladies are now asking for $20 an hour. Respondents are all complaining that these folks are illegal and basically don’t deserve the $20 an hour requested. Labor can ask for the salary they deem appropriate. The potential employer has the right to say no. My local credit union offers to process payroll for one domestic employee (nanny/housekeeper) per household. Here in the west I pay $25 hr. My payroll for the handyman and cleaning person are all handled by my accountant.
