Popular-Priced Tzaddeek, is there really a transliteration

system that uses periods in that way? (We could talk about how readers of English find words with more vowels than consonants

And why is this “not a tzneeuth.dige conversation?”

I read an article about how someone developed tomatoes with

excellent flavor, but supermarket chains declined to carry them

because they didn’t think there would be demand for them.

I think he might just have been humorously using the formula of halachos such as those about drinking havdoloh wine during the 9 Days, and assuming people would realize not to take the answer seriously. (Really, now, “such is the minhag of the rabbonim and talmidei chachomim that they never do gelillah in such shuls?” In a shul where gelilah is customarily given to a child, it would be a bizayon to give it to an adam chashuv! So I don’t think his post is to be taken at face value.)

Are you allowed to kill a creature just because you feel like it?

All you need is a hunting license. You mix halacha and secular law by bringing up legal penalties for animal-killing, Abba_S (as you surely know those laws don’t include insects). Which one are we talking about?

Yes, some people like me wouldn’t think a chassidish girl would

in reply to: "Up and back" – the same as "back and forth?" #1209328

I never heard of it. What does it mean?

It is used to mean “back and forth.” (In some of the Google results, “up” was more literal, as in [not actual text] “I have to go to the mountains tomorrow, but I think I can get up and back in one day,” which isn’t quite the same thing. The uses I was referring to were more like “R’ Yankel went up and back for an hour.”)

You are a very chashuv yid.

I’m not going to explain it (but it has nothing to do with the chassidish shidduch practice of “bishow,” which I assume was what you meant).

If you knew it would be coming, I don’t think you would have to

do anything again. (The closest thing I saw mentioned in Rabbi Bodner’s sefer was that if someone often brings food home with them, it is considered as though you had that food in mind when

    you made the original bracha.)

I’ll have to look up how different things need to be in order to

be considered a mixture. I doubt halacha recognizes differences

in in-game usage (or possibility of use) – they’re not “real.”

I’m a male, and I find it hard to believe anyone would be

I think that rule about double meanings is meant to refer specifically to second meanings that are inappropriate.

(There’s a specific term that could have been used, but then

people might Google it (not knowing the term) and be exposed

    to inappropriate material.)

I once heard a quote (I think in the name of some great Rav, but I can’t remember who), I can’t remember the exact quote, but it was something along the lines of “A leader who has no enemies is not a leader.”

If a leader has no enemies, it shows that he must be giving into everyone all the time, and that would make him a follower, not a leader. A true leader has to be able to be strong enough to act against the tide and do things that are not popular!

    You may mean this:

“You have enemies? Good. That means you’ve stood up for something, sometime in your life.”

Actually, I think it’s in R’ Yisrael Salanter’s name that it is said, “A rav whose congregation doesn’t want to get rid of him isn’t a rav, and a rav whose congregation succeeds in getting rid of him isn’t a man.”

(The “stood up for something” quote is from Winston Churchill.)
