    Non Political:
    CS did not say that that wasn’t the purpose of man’s creation,
    only that it isn’t meant to be his motivation, which is correct.

    Chabadshlucha:
    Meaning, (if I guess the context correctly)
    All the OP had quoted was “the purpose of this world is to earn reward in the next world.” Your guess about the context seems to me to be a strange assumption to make (although the Mesillas Yeshorim does discuss next-worldly reward as a motivation and lishma/shelo lishma elsewhere in the sefer).

    From reading about it, it seems it was more about having his entire means of
    parnassah taken from him than the treatment he received, although that may
    of course have been a contributing factor. (What he shouted just before the
    act was “How do you expect me to make a living?” Whether the municipal
    inspector slapped him seems subject to debate, but it is claimed that he
    was also beaten up by assisting male personnel.)

    I heard or saw somewhere that “Noach lo la’adam shelo nivra” refers to reincarnating,
    not to a person’s initial descent into this world.

    Follow the money. Who benefits from not allowing boys to call girls directly, and properly demonstrate that they’re capable of taking care of the girl as a wife and building a nest to raise a family. Who benefits from the insanity of the regulation upon regulation that now has “competent adults” making all of the (not only introductions, but) arranging the specific details of each DATE for the lovely incompetent couple?! Follow the money.

    Shadchonim did not create the idea that boys and girls should not be in direct contact;
    insistence on the use of shadchonim is not due to shadchonim lobbying our legislature.
    (As far as I know, shadchonim don’t arrange the details of dates.)

    Its quite ironic that these boys who are complaining about girls who wont give a smoker a chance but will never consider a shidduch with out first going through dor yesharim. Hypocrisy at its best!

    Yep, smoking and risking children with Tay-Sachs are totally equivalent.
    (That was sarcastic, in case anyone couldn’t tell.)

    (By the way, Happy, I think that Gemara’s talking about how women feel, not giving us advice.)

    The failures of lottery winners don’t mean that winning the lottery is bad.
    It’s just that lottery winners are pre-selected to be bad with money.
    Before they won, they wasted what little they had on lottery tickets.

    The “ba” is not part of the root, but part of the Yiddish conjugation (I hope
    that’s the word) of the verb. To “bashmutz” someone is to besmirch them;
    to “badek” someone is to cover them.

    A new version of Shadows in the Woods has been released by ThinkFun (best known
    for their Rush Hour puzzle series). Per U.S. safety regulations, it includes an electronic
    lantern. The government can’t stop you from using a candle at home, but either way,
    it’s not suited for Shabbos.

    What did the wine say when it get stepped on?
    Nothing, but it did let out a little wine.

    I think “wine” in the first line is supposed to be “raisin” (or maybe “grape”).

    Why not assur everything that could remotely be used, directly or indirectly,
    in committing aveiros.

    Because that would be as silly as that argument is.

    Those who mindlessly speak about assuring automobiles, electric-powered devices,
    and other forms of modern technology…

    Really? Have any rabbonim ever spoken of forbidding electricity?

    We have seen too many videos of chashuve rabbonim and even gadolei h’dor flying on
    private jets, being treated in hospitals that rely on the internet for medical knowledge and
    information sharing etc. to accept these recycled arguments against using modern technology.

    Surely you’re joking, Shirley.

    To call something “reductio ad absurdum” is merely to classify it;
    it’s a type of argument, not a logical fallacy.

    A: There are also shailohs since many hold that their marriages were valid, but their divorces weren’t, and children of remarriages are mamzerim.
    B: again can’t that be the case with anyone? Who knows what happened down the line?

    Although it is possible for there to be an unknown issue with someone’s yichus,
    we assume everything was done properly because those involved were part of
    the observant community which usually handles these matters properly.
    The same cannot be assumed when the people in question were known
    not to have been observant.
